Swanson (left heel contusion) to miss ASG, heads to IL
NEW YORK -- A day after he announced that he would not play in the All-Star Game in Seattle on Tuesday, Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to July 6, because of a left heel contusion
Swanson hurt his heel running the bases against the Brewers during Wednesday night¡¯s 4-3 victory. ?The 29-year-old is hoping that rest during the All-Star break will help get him back on the field as soon as possible. Swanson will not be traveling to Seattle to watch the All-Star festivities, planning to instead return home and rest.
¡°It is unfortunate to get into this position,¡± Swanson said on Saturday. ¡°The biggest thing -- just from a timing standpoint -- I¡¯m getting four days with the [All-Star] break. It was almost, in a way, like a good insurance policy not to lose some retroactive dates. So, it stinks. I¡¯m making the best decision possible for the group. Hopefully I¡¯ll get back in there soon.¡±
Swanson has been a welcome addition since signing a seven-year, $177 million contract with Chicago this past winter. Entering Friday¡¯s action, he leads all Cubs position players in wins above replacement (2.9), per Baseball Reference. Overall, Swanson is hitting .258 with 10 home runs and 36 RBIs.
¡°In some metrics, he is leading National League shortstops,¡± Cubs manager David Ross said. "He has been great for us. I¡¯m super thankful by how we were able to get that type of player -- the way he works, the example he sets, the way he is wired.¡±
