GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Dodgers made a slew of roster moves on Monday, including placing absent outfielder Andrew Toles on the restricted list.

They also optioned right-handed pitchers Dennis Santana and Brock Stewart, catcher Keibert Ruiz and infielder Edwin Rios and reassigned outfielders Kyle Garlick and Shane Peterson and catcher Will Smith to Minor League camp.

Placing Toles on the restricted list is a procedural move that opens a 40-man roster spot. Toles never reported to camp as he deals with an unspecified personal issue. There are 40 players in camp -- 16 infielders/outfielders, 21 pitchers and three catchers.

Hill, Jansen, Seager appear in Minor League game
The Dodgers had Rich Hill start on the Minor League side on Monday, preferring not to give Giants big league hitters the opportunity to see Hill. He pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run and striking out seven. Hill is the most stretched out of all Dodgers starting pitchers.

Also on the Minor League side, Kenley Jansen pitched an inning, giving up a home run with two strikeouts. Jansen said he hopes to pitch in back-to-back games this weekend.

Corey Seager, who also batted on the Minor League side, might begin to play defense in Minor League games by the end of the week, manager Dave Roberts said.

Other notes
? Walker Buehler is scheduled to throw live batting practice on Wednesday for the second time, which should set him up for his first game action this weekend. Buehler is healthy but has been slow-played after last year's innings spike.

? In the big league game, won by the Giants, 4-1, Minor Leaguer Tony Gonsolin started and pitched three perfect innings with three strikeouts. Gonsolin, one of the last remaining non-roster invitees still in camp, hasn't allowed a run in six spring innings. Despite signing for a token $2,500 bonus in 2016, he is ranked the No. 5 prospect in the organization by MLB Pipeline.

"Just his composure against good big league hitters and the way he commands four pitches, it was a very efficient, productive day for him," Roberts said. "All of his pitches come out of the same lane. He does very well and his arm speed is similar with all the pitches, so when you can change eye level, it keeps hitters off balance."

"I'm just trying to work up the ladder and hopefully, one day, pitch for the Dodgers," said Gonsolin. "It's been fun. It's a new experience every day and hopefully I'll get to call these guys teammates some day."

The Dodgers' offense was held to three hits, all doubles, by Joc Pederson, Alex Verdugo and Daniel Castro.

After a day off on Tuesday, the Dodgers resume play on Wednesday night with Ross Stripling starting against the White Sox. Also scheduled to pitch for the Dodgers are Joe Kelly, Yimi Garcia and Stewart.
