Reliever Treinen, Dodgers agree on 2-year deal
DALLAS -- The Dodgers brought back one of the most important bullpen pieces from their World Series campaign on Tuesday, agreeing with Blake Treinen on a two-year, $22 million contract.
Treinen, 36, has pitched for the Dodgers since 2020. Injuries limited him to five appearances in 2022 and 50 in '24. He missed 2023 while recovering from shoulder surgery.
But when healthy, Treinen has shown that he has the stuff to rank among the best relievers in the Majors. In his four seasons with L.A., he's compiled a 2.29 ERA with nine saves in 154 appearances and 169 strikeouts in 149 2/3 innings in the regular season.
Though he didn¡¯t make his 2024 debut until May 5 after being sidelined with a lung contusion from a line drive that hit him during Spring Training, Treinen posted a 1.93 ERA over 50 appearances (46 2/3 innings) and struck out 30.4% of the batters he faced while walking only 6% for the Dodgers.
More importantly, Treinen rose to the occasion when the lights were brightest in the postseason.
Treinen allowed three runs, all earned, across 12 1/3 innings (2.19 ERA) and proved to be the lockdown arm the Dodgers needed en route to their eighth World Series title. He pitched more than an inning in five of his nine appearances, including 2 1/3 scoreless frames in the decisive Game 5 of the Fall Classic -- which marked his longest outing since he threw three innings in a 14-inning marathon while with the A's in 2018.
With an arsenal featuring a devastating sweeper that had him ranked third in MLB among qualified pitchers in run value last season (+10), Treinen remains one of the most difficult relievers to hit. Opponents batted just .120 against the sweeper in 2024, with the pitch averaging 15.2 inches of horizontal movement to the right-hander¡¯s glove side.
Treinen¡¯s sinker, which averaged 94.6 mph this past season, also baffled hitters, averaging 27.2 inches of vertical drop to the arm side, placing him in the 95th percentile among qualifying pitchers.
If Treinen can stay healthy, there¡¯s no reason not to think he will be a reliable and possibly even dominant reliever as he enters his age-37 campaign in 2025.
