Dodgers right-hander Dustin May, who was rehabbing after surgery last year to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right arm, will not pitch in 2024 following a procedure to repair an esophageal tear, the Dodgers confirmed on Saturday night.

¡°While at dinner on Wednesday, Dodger right-hander Dustin May experienced sudden pain in his esophagus and stomach that continued after he returned home," the team said in a statement. "He contacted the medical staff and ultimately underwent successful surgery on his esophagus. May will not return to pitch for the Dodgers this season.¡±

ESPN's Jeff Passan was the first to report May's situation.

May, who was the Dodgers¡¯ No. 3 prospect per MLB Pipeline when he made his Major League debut in 2019, posted a 2.93 ERA over 113 2/3 innings from 2019-21. He then had to undergo Tommy John surgery, which caused him to miss the remainder of the ¡¯21 campaign and most of the ¡¯22 season. Last season, May pitched well before the flexor tendon injury, posting a 2.63 ERA through nine starts.

With a fastball that has regularly touched 100 mph, along with an assortment of secondary offerings, May's absence has been felt along with several other hits to the Dodgers' starting rotation -- Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Walker Buehler, among others, are currently sidelined, as well.
