How each player did in the Fall Stars Game

October 13th, 2019

The 14th edition of the Arizona Fall League's Fall Stars Game was held Saturday night at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, with a number of the game's top prospects on display, including the Twin's No. 1 prospect -- and No. 9 on the Top 100 -- Royce Lewis, who was named the Most Valuable Player in a matchup that saw the East Fall Stars take down the West squad 4-2.

Here's what each player did:

AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST

Blue Jays (East)
Jackson Rees
, Toronto's lone representative in the matchup, came on with two outs in the top of the eighth for the East Fall Stars, and the 25-year-old right-hander induced a groundout to end the frame.

Orioles (West)
Mason McCoy
, Baltimore¡¯s No. 24 prospect, started at second base for the West team and went 0-for-2 with a strikeout. The Orioles¡¯ No. 8 prospect, Dean Kremer, came on to pitch the third inning, and the 23-year-old right-hander kept East off the board with a scoreless frame, allowing one hit.

Red Sox (West)
Jarren Duran
, the Red Sox No. 4 prospect, entered the game in the bottom of the sixth as a defensive replacement in center field for the West Fall Stars. In his lone at-bat, Duran struck out. Marcus Wilson turned a strong eight-game campaign in the AFL into a starting spot in left field. He struck out to lead off the second, and flied out to right field to close out the top of the third before being replaced.

Rays (East)
After slashing .306/.384/.571 with nine extra-base hits in 16 AFL games, Vidal Brujan earned the starting spot at second base for the East Fall Stars. Tampa Bay¡¯s No. 3 prospect singled and struck out before being replaced. Josh Lowe was one of three players on the East squad to play the whole game, as he finished 1-for-3 with a go-ahead RBI double in the fourth. He was involved in an outfield collision with center fielder Victor Victor Mesa, but neither was injured. Ronaldo Hernandez grounded out to second in the seventh in his lone plate appearance. The club¡¯s No. 7 prospect has impressed across eight games with Salt River, batting .346 with a .970 OPS. Shane Baz entered the game in the top of the sixth, and Tampa Bay¡¯s No. 6 prospect lit up the radar gun throughout the frame. Six pitches in the matchup were thrown at velocities of 99 mph or higher, and the 20-year-old right-hander threw five of them, Baz also hitting triple digits once.

Yankees (West)
Brandon Wagner
got the start at first base for the West Fall Stars on Saturday and the 24-year-old left-handed hitter went 0-for-3 with a walk in the loss as the lone representative of the Yankees.

AL CENTRAL

Indians (East)
Cleveland prospect Argenis Angulo entered the matchup for the East Fall Stars in the top of the ninth and the 25-year-old right-hander earned a hold after facing two batters and fanning them both.

Royals (West)
Kyle Isbel
, the Royals¡¯ No. 8 prospect, got the West squad on the board in the third inning, launching a solo shot 414 feet to right field, coming off the bat at 107 mph. He finished the contest 1-for-3. Kansas City¡¯s No. 3 prospect, Daniel Lynch, started the matchup for the West Fall Stars and the 22-year-old left-hander opened the game with a perfect frame, striking out two.

Tigers (East)
Anthony Castro,
Detroit¡¯s No. 20 prospect, took the mound for the East Fall Stars in the third. The 24-year-old right-hander allowed a solo homer to Royals¡¯ No. 8 prospect Kyle Isbel, but recorded two outs and struck out one.

Twins (East)
Royce Lewis,
Minnesota¡¯s top prospect, was named the MVP of the Fall Stars Game after blasting a two-run homer in the second. He also played the entirety of the contest at third base. Entering the night, Lewis led the league with a .407 batting average and was second in the AFL with 38 total bases in 14 games. He was called out on strikes in the fourth and delivered a hard-hit groundout in the sixth to finish 1-for-3. Zach Neff earned the save for the East Fall Stars. The 23-year-old left-hander came on in the top of the ninth with two outs before allowing a single and then inducing a popup to end the game.

White Sox (West)
Blake Rutherford,
Chicago¡¯s No. 9 prospect, came into the game as the designated hitter in the sixth inning and grounded out in his first at-bat. In the top of ninth, the 22-year-old added a single to his day. Tyler Johnson, the White Sox No. 19 prospect, threw a perfect sixth inning for the West Fall Stars. The 24-year-old right-hander struck out one in his frame.

AL WEST

A¡¯s (East)
Leading the Fall League with seven homers and hitting .333/.422/.796 through his first 15 AFL games, Oakland¡¯s No. 17 prospect Greg Deichmann earned the start as the East Fall Stars designated hitter. The 24-year-old slugger went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in the win.

Angels (East)
Jo Adell
earned the start in left field for the East Fall Stars and went 0-for-3 with a strikeout before being lifted. The Angels' top prospect owns an OPS north of 1.000 over his past 10 AFL appearances and remains one of the premier talents on display in Arizona. Brandon Marsh plated a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, coming off the bench to take over in center field. Through 11 games, Marsh leads Mesa with a .381 batting average and .449 on-base percentage. Isaac Mattson came out of the bullpen for the fourth inning and the 24-year-old right-hander allowed a solo home run to Reds¡¯ No. 7 prospect Tyler Stephenson but that was all in his frame.

Astros (West)
J.J. Matijevic
, Houston¡¯s No. 17 prospect, earned his starting spot as the designated hitter for the West Fall Stars after beginning his fall campaign with a slash line of .309/.338/.456 in 17 games. The 23-year-old doubled on Saturday as part of a 1-for-2 day at the dish.

Mariners (West)
Julio Rodriguez
, the Mariners¡¯ No. 2 prospect, entered the game for the West Fall Stars in the sixth inning as a defensive replacement in right field. In his lone at-bat, Rodriguez grounded out. Aaron Fletcher (No. 26) started the seventh frame for the West squad, and the 23-year-old left-hander recorded two strikeouts before making way for Dodgers¡¯ prospect Brett de Geus. Sam Delaplane, Seattle¡¯s No. 30 prospect, came on in relief with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and the 24-year-old right-hander struck out the only batter he faced.

Rangers (West)
Bubba Thompson
entered the game in the bottom of the fifth as a defensive replacement in left field and the Rangers' prospect showed off his wheels in his first at-bat, despite grounding out. The 21-year-old registered an elite 31 ft/sec sprint speed in his attempt to beat the ball out, and added a strikeout in his 0-for-2 effort. Cole Uvila entered the game for the West Fall Stars in the fifth, and in his perfect frame, the 25-year-old right-hander induced a flyout and struck out two. Uvila¡¯s two best curveballs in the matchup had spin rates of 2,965 and 3,379, which is especially impressive considering just 4.6 percent of the curveballs tracked by Statcast during the regular season had spin rates of 3,000-plus rpm. The MLB average on curves this season was 2,523 rpm and Ryan Pressly led all MLB pitchers with 100 curves thrown at 3,305 rpm. Batters hit .141 and whiffed on 43 percent of their swings against his curve in the regular season, while MLB hitters as a whole hit .172 and slugged .291 vs 3,000-plus rpm curves this year.

NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST

Braves (East)
Atlanta¡¯s No. 18 prospect Trey Harris entered the game in the top of the sixth inning as a defensive replacement in left field, and the 23-year-old outfielder struck out in his lone at-bat.

Marlins (East)
Nick Neidert¡¯s
strong AFL campaign earned him the start on the mound for the East Fall Stars. He continued to baffle bats, as he struck out four over two scoreless frames. Miami¡¯s No. 11 prospect has already been named Pitcher of the Week once, having posted a 1.62 ERA through four starts. Victor Victor Mesa got the start in center field, but had his evening cut short after an outfield collision in the third inning. His right knee was hit by right fielder Josh Lowe, but Mesa was able to run off the field under his own power. Mesa lined out to right in his lone at-bat. Alex Vesia entered the game for the top of the eighth for the East squad and the 23-year-old left-hander recorded a strikeout and a lineout before being replaced.

Mets (East)
Andres Gimenez
(No. 3) was named the starting shortstop for the East Fall Stars after beginning his AFL campaign with a .333/.400/.533 slash line with six extra-base hits in 12 games. The 21-year-old infielder went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in the win. Jordan Humphreys worked a clean frame against the top of West Fall Stars lineup, including a strikeout to polish off the frame. The right-hander has impressed during his time in Arizona, allowing one run over his first three starts.

Phillies (East)
After getting his fall started by hitting .327/.345/.442 with a homer and three doubles in his first 13 AFL games, Phillies¡¯ top prospect and East Fall Stars starting first baseman Alec Bohm went 1-for-1 with a walk and two runs scored in the win.

Nationals (West)
Luis Garcia
produced the first spark of the Fall Stars Game with a rocket double in the first inning. The Nationals¡¯ No. 2 prospect played the entirety of the contest at shortstop and finished 1-for-4, including a lineout to center. Through 13 games with Surprise, the 19-year-old has produced a .390 on-base percentage. Andrew Lee threw the fourth inning for the West Fall Stars, and the 25-year-old right-hander allowed two runs on two hits, also striking out two in his frame.

NL CENTRAL

Brewers (West)
David Fry
earned the start at third base for the West Fall Stars and was one of three players in the starting lineup to play the entirety of the contest. The Brewers prospect finished 0-for-4 at the plate, including making the final out as the tying run in the ninth. Victor Castaneda had made a habit of baffling opposing AFL batters coming into the Fall Stars Game with a .184 batting average against. He was unable to keep that success going, yielding a two-run home run to eventual Fall Stars Game MVP Royce Lewis in the second.

Cubs (East)
Miguel Amaya
, who was named the best defensive player in the Fall Stars Game, went 0-for-2 at the dish, grounding out to third in the second and striking out to conclude the fourth. The Cubs¡¯ No. 2 prospect has impressed during his time in Arizona, totaling a .385 on-base percentage in nine games with Mesa. Jordan Minch had difficulty finding the strike zone during his short stint, walking the first two batters that he faced. He beared down to escape the third frame with a fly out to right.

Cardinals (West)
Seth Elledge
(No. 25) came on in relief to start the eighth inning for the West Fall Stars and the 23-year-old right-hander recorded a strikeout and a groundout before coming out of the matchup. Ivan Herrera struck out in his lone Fall Stars Game at-bat. The 19-year-old has impressed in limited action with Glendale, batting .300 across six games.

Pirates (West)
Jared Oliva,
who entered the Fall Stars Game with an AFL-high nine doubles, went 0-for-2 while batting third and playing right field for the West Fall Stars. The sole Pirates representative struck out swinging in both the first and fifth with a walk in the third sandwiched in between.

Reds (West)
Tyler Stephenson
continued to sting the ball in Arizona, clobbering a home run in the fourth for the West Fall Stars. Cincinnati¡¯s No. 7 prospect lined out to second in his other plate appearance, finishing 1-for-2 as the club¡¯s starting catcher.

NL WEST

D-backs (East)
Geraldo Perdomo
, the D-backs No. 7 prospect, got a pair of at-bats after taking over at shortstop for the East Fall Stars, finishing 0-for-2 with a strikeout. Arizona's No. 4 prospect Seth Beer also entered the game off the bench and flew out to center in his lone plate appearance.

Dodgers (West)
Dodgers' No. 15 prospect Omar Estevez grounded out to third in the seventh in his lone at-bat of the Fall Stars Game, having entered to play second base. Brett de Geus recorded the final out of the seventh inning for the West squad, with the right-hander getting a groundout to end the frame.

Giants
None of the Giants¡¯ players in the AFL participated in the Fall Stars Game.

Padres
None of the Padres¡¯ players in the AFL participated in the Fall Stars Game.

Rockies (East)
Ashton Goudeau
recorded a hold after working a 1-2-3 seventh inning, which saw him record one strikeout. Now including the Fall Stars Game, the right-hander is yet to allow a run in Arizona over 10 innings of work with 12 strikeouts to his credit. He was the lone representative for the Rockies in the matchup.
