Pedro Julio Astacio attended Pilar Rondon High School in the Dominican Republic...has a ranch in Quisesquea, Dominican Republic next to ranch of major leaguer Armando Benitez...wife's name is Ana...has 3 sons: Pedro Jr. (8/30/96), Julio (8/11/98) and Pedro Justo (11/17/99); and 2 daughters: Monica (9/6/94) and Annie (10/14/88).
2005
Astacio, showing the poise that made him a quality pitcher for a decade with the Dodgers and Rockies, revived his career with the Padres after getting released by the Rangers in June. Moving comfortably into the rotation, Astacio became the team's most consistent starter down the stretch. In the last two months, he was 4-0 with a 2.20 ERA, and he started Game 2 of the NLDS, losing to the Cards in St. Louis.
1992
Began the year with Albuquerque (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League...was recalled by Los Angeles on June 2...made his major league debut on June 3 vs. Philadelphia and hurled a 3-hit, complete game shutout...began his career with 4 shutouts in his first 10 starts.
1993
Led the Dodgers with 14 wins...tossed a career-best 21.0 consecutive scoreless innings from Sept. 12-Sept. 24...also compiled a 15.0 inning scoreless streak from Sept. 2-Sept. 7.
1994
Registered the 5th-lowest home ERA among National League starters with a 2.63 mark...had 11 K's in his first outing of the year on April 8 vs. Atlanta.
1995
Opened season as Dodgers' 5th starter...made first big league relief appearance on June 23 at San Francisco...worked all 3 games of NLDS vs. Cincinnati.
1996
Won a season-high 5 straight decisions from July 25-Sept. 2.
1997
Opened the year 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA...after he was traded to Colorado on Aug. 18, the Rockies were 6-1 in his 7 starts...set a career best with 12 K's on Sept. 14th at Atlanta.
1998
Reached the 1000-inning plateau on May 29 vs. Houston...made his first relief appearance since April 11, 1997 on Sept. 27 vs. San Francisco.
1999
Established or matched career highs with 17 wins, 34 starts, 210 strikeouts and 232.0 innings with Colorado...was 3rd in the NL in strikeouts and complete games (7) and tied for 8th in wins...also ranked 2nd with 11 road victories...established franchise highs in innings pitched and strikeouts...had 5 games with 10 or more strikeouts, including a season-high 11 K's twice...struck out Montreal's Wilton Guerrero in the 8th inning on Sept. 6 for his 1000th career strikeout...worked 7.0 or more innings in 21 of his 34 starts...won 6 of his first 7 decisions in the second half...no-hit the Brewers for 6.0 innings on Aug. 10 at Milwaukee...collected 20 hits, tying him with Darren Oliver for 2nd among major league pitchers...Mike Hampton was first with 23.
2000
Finished 8th in the NL and led the Rockies in strikeouts... ranked 3rd in the NL with 8.8 strikeouts per 9 innings...made his first career Opening Day start on April 3 at Atlanta vs. Greg Maddux...hurled 6.1 shutout innings before allowing back-to-back home runs to Andres Galarraga and Andruw Jones in a 2-0 loss....won a career-high 6 consecutive decisions from April 14-May 24...took a no-hitter into the 7th inning on July 23 vs. San Diego...Al Martin singled to lead off the 7th inning...missed the first start of his career (239 starts) on September 21 with a strained left oblique muscle while batting in the 3rd inning...underwent minor surgery on October 9 on his left knee at the Steadman/Hawkins clinic in Vail, CO...the procedure cleared up chronic inflammation in his patellar tendon.
2001
Opened the year winning 3 of his first 4 starts...during that span, he allowed just 6 earned runs in 28.0 innings (1.93 ERA) with 7 walks and 29 strikeouts...fanned 10 or more batters twice during the season, including season-high 11 K's on May 18 at Florida...had 10 K's on April 5 vs. St. Louis...allowed one hit in 8.0 innings on April 22 at Arizona...earned his 100th major league win on in CG 3-hitter on June 3 vs. San Francisco...began July with 2 complete games in 3 starts...tossed 3-hit shutout on July 5 at San Diego....earned win with 7.0 innings, August 21 at Philadelphia, his last appearance prior to DL stint...was placed on the 15-Day DL on August 23 with inflammation in his right shoulder and missed the remainder of the season.
2002
Won Mets debut on April 5 at Atlanta...won 5 of his first 6 decisions, best start of his career...went 8-3 with a 3.17 ERA prior to the All-Star break...earned a victory in each of his first 3 starts with Mets, just the 4th pitcher in franchise history to accomplish that feat...Bobby Ojeda won his first 4 starts with New York (1986), Sid Fernandez won his first 3 starts (1984), and Bob Shaw was victorious in his first 3 starts (1966)....tossed complete game in win on April 16 vs. Atlanta...pitched 6.1 hitless innings before Milwaukee's Geoff Jenkins singled to left to break up his no-hit bid on April 27 at Shea...previous longest no-hit bid had come on April 16, 1999 with Colorado at New York (NL) when he hurled 7.0 hitless innings...Carlos Baerga doubled to lead off the 8th inning in that contest....named the Mets Pitcher of the Month for April...went 3-1 with an 0.92 ERA in 6 games, all starts...tossed his 2nd complete game of the season, a 2- hit shutout on May 14 at Los Angeles...also earned Mets Pitcher of the Month honors in May after going 2-1 with a 2.90 ERA in 6 starts....threw a complete game in win on Aug. 6 at Milwaukee...allowed 4 runs or less in 24 of his 31 starts...allowed 3 runs or less in 20 starts...pitched 6.0 innings or more 21 times...worked 7.0 innings or more in 13 of his 31 starts.
2003
Went 3-2 with a 7.36 ERA (30 ER/36.2 IP) over 7 starts on the year...placed on the disabled list on March 21 with tendinitis in his right shoulder...pitched in 4 games for St. Lucie (A) of the Florida State League on rehab assignment...went 0-2 with a 2.08 ERA in those 4 starts...made first start major league start of the season on April 24 vs. Houston, earning win with 5.0 innings...that outing was his first major league start since Sept. 27, 2002 vs. Atlanta...in 4 starts at Shea, went 3-0 with a 3.38 ERA (9 ER/24.0 IP) as Mets won all 4 of his home starts...allowed 2 earned runs or less in 3 of his 7 starts...permitted 3 earned runs or less in 4 of his 7 starts...pitched 6.0 innings 4 times...placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 1, retroactive to May 29, with right shoulder tendinitis... transferred to the 60-day DL on June 13 and did not pitch again for the rest of the season.
2004
Spent year recovering from right shoulder surgery and was signed to a minor league contract by Boston organization on June 30...made 5 minor league appearances, posting a combined 1.50 ERA (3 ER/18.0 IP)...retired all 6 batters faced in first outing for Gulf Coast squad on July 27 at Pirates...other GCL outing did not come until Aug. 17 (G1) vs. Pirates...moved to Portland (AA) in the Eastern League and tossed 4.0 shutout innings in only appearance on Aug. 22 vs. Trenton...finished rehab with 2 outings for Pawtucket (AAA)...pitched 4.1 innings on Aug. 27 at Scranton Wilkes-Barre, taking loss...in final game on Sept. 3 vs. Rochester, allowed one run and one hit in 5.0 innings...purchased by Boston from Pawtucket on Sept. 5...made AL debut on Sept. 8 at Oakland, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks in 1.2 innings...next outing came on Sept. 19 at New York, allowing 3 runs in 2.0 innings, including a 2-run homer by Alex Rodriguez...made lone start on Sept. 2 (G2) at Baltimore, allowing 4 runs in 4.0 innings...major league opponents batted .342, .360 (9-25) by lefties and .308 (4-13) by right-handers.
