Tied for third in the American League in walks and finished second in the majors to Arizona's Jay Bell (4.39) with an average of 4.38 pitches per plate appearance ... Also ranked third in the A.L. with an average of 4.1 at bats per RBI and seventh with 13.1 at bats per home run ... Signed a minor league contract with Oakland on February 17 and was the A's Opening Day starter at first base ... Battled injuries for much of the season after being put on the 15-day disabled list April 23 with a ligamentous injury in his left foot ... He was injured when he stepped down wrong while rounding second base against Los Angeles on April 22 ... The injury caused him to miss all of May as he returned from the DL and a rehab assignment on June 8 ... Appeared in 73 games, hitting .208 on the season with seven home runs and 38 RBI ... Was 3 for 4 with an RBI in the club's first game as a member of the National League, March 31 at Atlanta ... Hit a grand slam April 21 against Los Angeles in the fifth inning off Ramon Martinez ... It was the fifth slam of his career, tying him for the club record with Cecil Cooper ... Went back on the DL August 16, retroactive to August 15, with a strained right hamstring and was activated on September 1 ... Had season ending surgery on September 18 to repair a mid-foot fracture in his left foot ... The surgery was performed in Houston by Dr. Donald Baxter ... The fracture was a result of his initial April 22 injury ... Was awarded the Brewers' 1998 Roberto Clemente True Value Man of the Year award for his Community Service work in the Portland and Milwaukee communities.

1997

Season was cut short on June 3 when he was placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to June 1) with an inflamed left shoulder ... Underwent surgery June 17 to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder ... Surgery was performed by Dr. Frank Jobe at Centinela Hospital in Inglewood, California ... Had two home runs on April 19 at Cleveland, both off Charles Nagy ... It was his sixth career two homer game ... Also had a season high three RBI in that game which he matched on May 3 at Seattle ... Last home run of the season came on May 25 at Chicago off James Baldwin ... 10 of his 11 home runs came on the road ... His spring training home run total of seven was the most by a Milwaukee player since Ben Oglivie had eight in 1983 ... Collected 10 multi-hit games for a career total of 143 ... Had a breakthrough season, setting career highs in at bats (543), runs (108), hits (163), doubles (28) and RBI (118) ... Led the club in runs, total bases (295), home runs (34), RBI and walks ... Became the first Milwaukee player to hit .300 with at least 30 homers and 100 RBI since Cecil Cooper batted .307 with 30 homers and 126 RBI in 1983 ... Split the season between Denver of the Triple-A American Association and the Brewers ... Led the American Association in RBI (69), ranked second in homers (18) and was third in average (.321) when he was recalled by the Brewers on July 9 ... Made his major league debut that day against Kansas City ... Collected his first big league hit on July 10, a single off of Kansas City's Tom Gordon ... Had his first RBI on July 11 off the Royals Neal Heaton ... Hit his first home run off Rod Nichols on July 28 at Cleveland ... Stole a club record four bases in a game on September 12 at Baltimore ... When he stole his 10th base of the season on September 24, he gave the Brewers 11 players with 10 or more steals in the same season which tied the major league record held by the 1901 Phillies.
