Jose missed the majority of the season due to an injury to his left shoulder...notched the Royals' 1st win of the season on April 5 at Toronto, allowing 3 hits and 2 earned runs over 6.0 innings in a 4-3 victory...missed one start in April due to a tired arm...returned for a 6-3 win his next start vs. Seattle on April 30, but went on the 15-day disabled list on May 4 (retroactive to May 1) with tendinitis in his left shoulder...underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder in Los Angeles on June 23...procedure was performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum...a tear of the labrum cartilage was repaired, along with a clean-up of the undersurface of the rotator cuff and upper portion of the labrum cartilage...finished with a 2-2 record and a 5.86 ERA in 5 starts...allowed 29 hits in 27.2 innings...struck out 15 batters and posted 2 quality starts.

Earned Royals Pitcher of the Year honors for the 1st time in his career after posting a 10-14 record with a 3.85 ERA in 33 starts...his 10 wins was a career high, while the 3.85 ERA was the American League's 5th-best mark...recorded 5 complete games, tying for the league's 4th highest total...limited opposing batters to a .248 batting average, the league's 7th best mark...left-handers recorded a .242 average while right-handers batted at a .250 clip...held opponents to a .390 slugging pct., the league's 4th-best average...allowed 11.9 runners/9 innings, the league's 8th-best mark...led the team in ERA, complete games and strikeouts (141), tied for 1st in wins and was 2nd in innings pitched (208.0)...the Royals were 12-21 when he went to the hill despite his team-leading 19 quality starts...he was supported with 161 runs, or an average of 4.9 runs/game...the Royals scored 4 runs or fewer in 13 of his 14 setbacks...lost his 1st start of the season to Boston on April 7 despite allowing just 1 earned run in 6.0 innings, which set the early season tone...was just 2-2 after 8 starts despite a 1.93 ERA and 7 quality performances...named Royals Pitcher of the Month for April after going 1-1 with a 1.72 ERA in 5 starts...was 5-6 with a 3.01 ERA at the break, earning All-Star honors for the 2nd time in his career...was the only southpaw named to the American League staff...he worked 1.0 scoreless inning in the mid-summer classic held in Boston, allowing 1 hit with 1 strikeout...dropped a season-high 5 straight starts from August 11-Sept. 1, despite tossing 2 complete game outings in that stretch...in fact, he was the losing pitcher in each of his first 4 route-going performances of the season...finished the season strong with 3 wins in his final 4 decisions, including wins in each of his last 2 starts...tossed a complete-game 5-2 win over Cleveland in his final outing of the year...fanned a season-high 8 batters on 2 occasions: August 22 at Tampa Bay and September 7 vs. New York.

Opened the year working in relief after making each of his first 49 big league appearances as a starter...was 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA in relief...recorded his 1st big league save with 3.0 scoreless innings of 1-hit relief at Oakland on April 19...moved into the starting rotation on May 10...recorded an 8-10 record with a 4.68 ERA as a starter...first win of the season was a route-going 5-hitter in a 4-0 win at Anaheim on May 27, snapping a personal 6-game losing streak...carried a no-hitter for 5.2 innings and finished with a 2-hitter, but suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss, as both Indian hits, including the game-winner in the 9th, were solo home runs by Manny Ramirez...matched his career high with 9 strikeouts in a 6.1-inning stint at Oakland on July 15.

Finished the campaign with a 9-12 record and 4.69 ERA in 33 starts...allowed a 1st-inning double to Oakland's Patrick Lennon May 27, then did not allow another hit in the contest, leaving the game after 8 innings with a 2-0 lead...extended his consecutive hitless innings stretch to 11 on June 1 at Texas...retired the first 14 batters he faced in that game before Dean Palmer broke up the no-hit bid in the 5th...established a career best with 9 strikeouts at Toronto on July 27...won 4 straight starts from June 1-16, earning the club's Pitcher of the Month award...did not allow any of the opponents to score more than 2 runs in that stretch...was the Royals lone representative on the All-Star squad...hurled 1 inning of relief in Cleveland, allowing the game-tying home run... became the winning pitcher of record when Sandy Alomar homered for the American League squad in a 3-1 win.

Began the season at the Double-A level and finished the season as one of baseball's top rookie pitchers...earned a spot on Baseball Digest's 1996 Rookie All-Star team and was named the Royals Minor League Pitcher of the Year...tied for 4th in the A.L. Rookie of the Year balloting with Rocky Coppinger behind Derek Jeter, James Baldwin and Tony Clark...logged an 8-6 record and 3.21 ERA in 16 games with the Royals, 15 of those coming after the All-Star break...contract was purchased by Kansas City on June 12...made his big league debut that day vs. California...allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in 6.0 innings but did not figure in the decision in the Angels' 4-3 win...was 21 years, 7 months and 3 days old when he made his debut... became the 7th-youngest pitcher to make a start in Royals history...posted his 1st big league victory with 7.2 innings of 6-hit ball in a 7-0 win at New York on July 25...recorded his 2nd straight 7-0 win on July 30 at Boston...twirled a 3-hit complete game in that contest for his 1st big league complete game and shutout...earned Royals Pitcher of the Month honors in both July (2-1, 2.10 ERA) and August (3-3, 2.88)...named the 12th-best rookie in the Major Leagues and the 2nd-best prospect in the American Association by Baseball America.
