Was Junior College All-American honorable mention... 2002 recipient of the John Hancock Roberto Clemente Award, given annually to the Major League Baseball player who exemplifies Clemente's passion for the game, sportsmanship and community involvement... With the honor, John Hancock Financial Services made a $25,000 donation in his name to the Steve Palmeiro Chapter of the National Paralysis Foundation in Leawood, KS... Thome's nephew, Brandon, is currently unable to walk after bruising his spinal cord in June of 2001...
