Fans share love for Uecker, 'The best friend I never met'
Fans share love for Uecker, 'The best friend I never met'

MILWAUKEE -- We all knew Bob Uecker. That¡¯s what happens when a voice fills the air of our homes and offices, our cars and backyard barbecues every summer for 54 years. It¡¯s why news of Uecker¡¯s passing on Thursday hit so hard and brought backso many vivid memoriesof our favorite moments ¡°with¡± Ueck -- big and small.
I asked fans to share their reflections and you filled up my inbox. It was just what I needed at the end of a very tough day, so thank you. I wish I could include them all, because they are special. But I can¡¯t, so I did my very best to sample how we¡¯re all feeling about losing Mr. Baseball.
As great as Uecker was in the big moments, it's the little moments that I loved the most. The late innings of a blowout, the random rabbit trails and old baseball stories. One glorious summer afternoon in the '90s, I was listening to a game while I played outside and heard him say:
"Beautiful day for baseball. The kind of day you just wanna lather yourself up with honey and let the ants crawl all over you."
That one has stuck with me for about 30 years now.
-- Zach Vinson, Nashville, Tenn. (grew up in Sheboygan)

I was 5 when my parents took me to my first Brewers game. We had really nice seats at County Stadium. I even got a BP ball from Frank Thomas. But all I cared about during the game was where Bob Uecker was, because he was my connection to the Brewers to that point. I repeatedly made my parents point out the radio booth to me.
My mom wrote Bob a letter telling him that and he signed my ticket stub from that game and sent it back. I have that stub framed and it has been on display in every place I've ever lived. From my childhood bedroom to my college dorm and my first house. I didn't know Bob personally, but, in some ways, it feels like I kind of did.

After my dad passed away two years ago, I've gone back and thought about so many memories of our time together. For almost every single one of those memories, Bob Uecker was in the background calling a game. We often went fishing together and up until his death, he still would always haul out a little battery-powered radio to listen to the Brewers wherever we were fishing, even bringing it into a trout stream hooked to his belt on more than one occasion. My dad was, and still is, the most important person in my life, and Uecker served as our background music for our entire time together. I'll miss them both.

Rather than sharing a memory, because I have so many in my 62 years of life, I will sum up my feelings of Bob this way: He was the best friend I never met.

Tonight downtown Milwaukee is lit up blue in honor of Bob Uecker. Summers in Milwaukee will never be the same. Rest easy Ueck! pic.twitter.com/uQkEqAIlnb
I worked on the grounds crew for the Brewers for years as a landscaper and had the chance on several occasions to go to Bob's house to help with mowing and general yard work. Once, when I was going to drop off some flowers at his house, I ended up sitting with him in his backyard for over two hours talking about life, baseball and a plethora of other things. Listening to Bob on the radio is one thing, but getting the chance to have a one-on-one conversation for over two hours is something special. We lost an amazing soul, but the memories I have will stick forever.

One of the highlights of my early Spring Trainings with the Brewers was when Ueck, on his way to the press box, would pass through the work room of all of us anonymous entry-level staffers -- and in those few seconds he never failed to make us all laugh. The definition of lighting up a room. RIP.
Last summer I was driving home with my 11-year-old from his baseball game and listening to the Brewers on the radio. Uecker is telling this long story about Robin Yount coming to an event the next day at the stadium. He says Yount will be grilling brats and is bringing wood from his wood-selling business to use for the grill. Then Uecker says Yount will be early because he has to go to his shift as a crossing guard for a Milwaukee School. I am laughing and my son is completely confused. My son says to me, "Robin Yount is a crossing guard and he sells wood?"
No, buddy, that is just classic Bob Uecker.

My grandpa and his buddies would go to many Brewers games (I believe in the late '80s) and their seats were right in front of the press box at County Stadium. One day, my grandpa and his friends saw Uecker walking up to them and my grandpa started telling them how he and Bob were friends and go way back.
He goes, ¡°Hey Bob, do you know who I am?¡±
Ueck goes, ¡°Dave, is that you?? How have things been?¡±
A quick conversation ensued, leaving the group of friends speechless. Turns out, my grandpa had on a jacket that had his name ¡°Dave¡± stitched on the front. On his feet, Ueck played into the bit with my grandpa and made it appear they were old friends catching up at the ballgame. The quick wit of Bob Uecker will forever hold a place in my memories.

When I interned for Fox Sports Wisconsin, a boy with health issues visited from Make-A-Wish or a similar program. He was shy and uncomfortable with the attention, barely said a word. Then we stopped by Ueck¡¯s booth. Ueck said he heard the boy had been through some surgery and asked if he had a scar. The boy nodded. Ueck then pulled his tucked shirt fully out, held it way up to his neck, leaned back, and said ¡°How bout THIS scar?!¡±, revealing his open heart surgery wound. The kid lit up laughing and started talking to him. Bob Uecker was the best.

You are going to hear a million stories that are bigger, funnier and better, but I¡¯ll never forget this moment as long as I live. My grandfather is 94 years old, has been a lifelong Brewer fan and holds his 1950s Milwaukee Braves program with Hank Aaron on the cover as one of his prized possessions. We were lucky enough to be a part of some team activities one Spring Training in the late 2000s and one night, we went to a dinner party with the team and Uecker was there.
My grandfather¡¯s brother-in-law played for the Phillies around the same time as Uecker, and when we got our chance to talk to Bob, my grandfather was eager to ask if Bob remembered Thornton Kipper. Thornton had a short, uninspiring career and Uecker almost certainly had never heard of him. But you would never know it by the way that Bob reacted. He said, ¡°Of course I remember Thornton. Great ballplayer!¡±
We spoke for a few more minutes and went on our way. I¡¯ve never seen my grandfather smile like that. He still talks about that interaction to this day. That was Uecker. He made every person he ever met feel special. That is what I will treasure most.

I still can¡¯t believe I was fortunate enough to work with and get to know Bob Uecker. He knew my name! Among all the memorable moments, I¡¯ll never forget the Florida road trip of 2008. I spotted Bob in his speedo at the pool. Legend! The entire traveling party was there, relaxing and chatting with Uecker. It still makes me smile even now.

I was a country kid from Eastern Iowa who grew up with no TV. Summer was sort of a slog. No friends, no variety. The only entertainment to be had was what you could create for yourself. But six times a week I could turn on the radio and Bob and the Brewers would entertain me for three hours. Today, kids rush through dinner to get shuttled to their next event or club or sport. I'd play catch in the yard until I had to come in to eat and then get to my room as fast as I could to turn on the game and get out my scorebook.
I remember being at County Stadium in the '90s when Bob was on leave for his heart and it was all anyone in the stands wanted to talk about. We were so worried that we would lose his voice. Instead, we got to hear him for another 30 years!
-- Seth Boffeli

Uecker was a mad genius who easily connected with the everyday fan. His famous line in the Miller Lite commercial where he announces he must be in the front row ¡ and then gets escorted to the nose bleed seats was a classic example of his humor. Truly a funny guy who made listening to the Milwaukee Brewers great. I can only imagine he is cracking up Saint Peter right now performing some kind of play-by-play or color on the incoming souls.
-- Prof. Rick Burton, Syracuse University professor and a former national advertising manager for Miller Lite¡¯s award-winning ¡°Less Filling ¨C Tastes Great¡± advertising campaign
In ¡®87 I took my Yankees fan father to a Brewers/Yankees game. Before the game there was an old-timers game featuring Mr. Baseball in left field. Every ball hit to Ueck, he threw up in the stands for the fans. Never heard my dad laugh so hard.
-- Patrick McKone, Oshkosh

My wife and I attended an ¡°opening of Miller Park¡± event held on the field. About 2,000 in attendance. We were sitting in the front near the VIP dais where Bob was emceeing. He pointed to our table -- about 10 of us -- and said, ¡°Stand up, lift up your chairs and see if you¡¯re the lucky winner of season tickets. The envelope is taped under your chair!¡¯¡± So all 10 of us stood up in our suits and dresses and were lifting up our chairs peering under the chairs for like a minute -- seemed longer! -- but no envelope. Finally, Bob chuckles and yells, ¡°Sit Down! There are no tickets.¡± Being the butt of a Uecker prank in front of 2,000 laughing attendees was awesome.

I always think of Ueck when I use the weather radar app on my phone. I tell my kids I'm looking at the pocket doppler.

The greatest memory is Easter Sunday 1987. Brewers down 4-1 against the Rangers. Rob Deer hit a mammoth home run to tie the game and Dale Sveum won it to extend the winning streak to 12 games. I was the only Brewers fan in our family, but everyone was jumping around in the backyard. I am a hospice nurse. I do not get emotional when someone passes, but this one hit me hard. Bob will truly be missed.

I recently retired as a police officer in suburban Chicago. I was a cop from 1988-2014. I am a diehard Brewers fan and I would listen to the broadcasts religiously in the squad car. When the Brewers were out west or in a rain delay, Bob would keep me company on all shifts, but especially the midnight shift. Very sad day indeed. The soundtrack of my summer.

Bob Uecker story:
My cousin is a cop. Near Am Fam, there is a police bar. He was in there one day with my aunt and uncle. The place is packed for lunch with police officers.
Ueck walked in. Took pictures with everyone and had his lunch. Then he left.
My childhood didn't end when I stopped believing in Santa, started high school, turned 18 or got my first real job. My childhood didn't end when I got married, bought a house or had kids. No, my childhood ended this morning at 10:13 when I was told that Bob Uecker -- the sound of my summers each year since 1998 when I first started listening -- had passed away.

Living in New Jersey, people would expect you to be a Yankees or Mets fan, but I became a Brewers fan. My sister bought me that Ryan Braun T-shirt from a Forman Mills clearance rack and my love for the Crew started. I would watch and listen to as many Brewers games as possible, falling in love with Uecker's calls and energy along the way. After college I was lucky enough to begin working for MLB Network in 2018. My first big project was the Brewers¡¯ "How They Got There" season recap. Throughout the years I've edited and produced tons of Brewers related content from highlights to hype reels, even your Brewers Beat Reports.
This year, after being a fan for over 20 years, I was finally able to go to Milwaukee to catch a home game. My love of the Brewers and Uecker allowed me to become a two-time Emmy Award-winning producer and changed my life forever.

When I was 6 years old I became the first person in my family to fall in love with baseball. My father had just a passing knowledge, so we learned the sport together. Long nights at his shop and 45-minute commutes were often brightened by the voice of Bob Uecker.
I took losses hard as a kid, but listening to Uecker taught me to always find humor in the moment. Win or lose, his sign off was always a comfort there will be another day, another game, another season.
Baseball taught me that life needs dedication, perseverance and discipline. Uecker taught me to always find joy regardless of the outcome and to share it with others.
Mr. Baseball wasn't just the announcer for the Milwaukee Brewers. For 162 days a year, he was the narrator of life lessons and some of the best memories with my father growing up. I know this is too long to share, but I really needed to write it out today.

The last days of winter turning into spring, the blazing days of summer, the beginning days of fall, those are my memories of Bob Uecker. He was not just a baseball announcer, he was the seasons of my life.
