Dec. 22: Nationals acquire 1B Nathaniel Lowe from Rangers in exchange for LHP Robert Garcia
Lowe, 29, slashed .265/.361/.401 with 16 homers and 69 RBIs last season on the Rangers. He ranked sixth in walks (71) and ninth in on-base percentage among the AL, and his 12.6 percent walk rate also was good for fourth among all players. He made 135 starts at first base with a .995 fielding percentage (fourth in the AL at the position).
Lowe won a Silver Slugger Award in 2022 along with a Gold Glove Award and a World Series championship in '23. He had spent his entire six-year career in the AL with the Rays and Rangers. Lowe won't be a free agent until after the 2026 season.
In one-plus seasons in Washington, Garcia went 5-8 with a 4.04 ERA in 91 2/3 relief innings. More >>
Dec. 19: RHP Michael Soroka signs one-year deal
Soroka, a 2015 first-round pick out of high school by Atlanta, joins the Nationals' starting rotation for the '25 season. For his career, he is 17-13 with a 3.76 ERA in 52 outings (287 innings) as a starter.
Soroka pitched the majority of last season out of the bullpen. He went 0-10 with a 4.74 ERA in 25 appearances, including nine starts, with the White Sox. But he thrived when he moved to Chicago¡¯s bullpen in mid-May. As a multiple-innings reliever, he posted a 2.75 ERA, held opponents to a .189 batting average and recorded 15.0 strikeouts per nine innings. More >>
INJURY UPDATES
OF Alex Call (partial tear of left plantar fascia)
Expected return: 2025
Call sustained the injury to his left foot while running after a shallow popup on Aug. 23. He was sidelined for the remainder of the season. Call batted .343 in 30 games with the Nats in 2024. (Last updated: Oct. 31)
RHP Cade Cavalli (Tommy John surgery; No. 8 on Nationals' Top 30 Prospects list)
Expected return: 2025
Cavalli, who missed the entire 2024 season, was looking forward to going through a regular throwing program this offseason. He underwent Tommy John surgery on March 22, 2023. (Last updated: Oct. 31)
RHP Mason Thompson (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: 2025
Thompson underwent his second Tommy John surgery on March 1 after previously undergoing the procedure in high school. He said in early September he feels stronger and overall better than he did after his first surgery. (Last updated: Oct. 31)
RHP Joan Adon (right shoulder biceps strain)
Expected return: 2025
Adon was sidelined on Aug. 28, retroactive to Aug. 25. He had a 6.75 ERA in eight games (including one start) with the Nationals in 2024. (Last updated: Oct. 31)
RHP Josiah Gray (right elbow/forearm flexor strain)
Expected return: 2025
Gray underwent Tommy John surgery and an internal brace procedure on July 24 to address a partially torn UCL. The procedure was performed by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington. Gray was limited to two starts in 2024. (Last updated: Oct. 31)
