25 Memorable Moments in 2025
Every baseball season has moments that we will always remember. We look back at 25 anniversary moments relating to 2025. The list begins in 1885 and ends in 2015.
The biggest is the Phillies first National League pennant in 1915. A rare team photo from Bob Warrington accompanies this story.
Another great moment came in 1995, when the induction of Mike Schmidt and Richie Ashburn turned the Baseball Hall of Fame ceremonies into sea of Phillies red.
March 10, 1955: The Phillies defeated the Detroit Tigers, 4-2, in the first game played at Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater, Fla. Right-handed pitcher Robin Roberts started for the Phillies. Third baseman Willie Jones¡¯ two-run double in the eighth inning was the game-winning hit.
April 12, 1965
The Phillies won the first National League game played at the Astrodome, 2-0, over Houston. Left-handed pitcher Chris Short tossed a four-hitter, and third baseman Dick Allen homered.
May 1, 2015
Ryan Howard, 35, played in his 1,299th game at first base to break the club record set by Fred Luderus. The last game for the 34-year-old Luderus was June 23, 1920.
May 12, 2005
Bobby Abreu tied a club record by homering in his fifth straight game in a 7-5 loss to the Cincinnati Reds at Citizens Bank Park. Bobby joined Dick Allen (1969) and Mike Schmidt (1979) as the only players in Phillies history.
May 14, 1975
First baseman Dick Allen, reacquired in a trade a week earlier, drew a standing ovation from the Veterans Stadium crowd (30,908) and then singled in his first at-bat. Left-hander Steve Carlton blanked Cincinnati, 4-0.
May 17, 1975
Right-hander Gene Garber set a club record and became just the third pitcher in Major League history to win three consecutive games in relief. (May 15, second game, 5-3 over CIN; May 16, 12-8 vs. ATL; May 17, 9-8 walk-off on three runs in bottom of ninth vs. ATL). All three games were at Veterans Stadium. His total innings pitched, 5 2/3.
May 24, 1935
The Phillies lost the first night game in MLB history, 2-1, at Cincinnati¡¯s Crosley Field. The contest is completed in a brisk 1:35 in front of 20,422 fans. President Franklin D. Roosevelt flipped on a light switch from the White House.
May 29, 1965
Third baseman Dick Allen hit an estimated 529-foot home run completely over the Coca-Cola billboard atop Connie Mack Stadium¡¯s left-center field roof off right-hander Larry Jackson. The first-inning blast sent the Phillies to a 4-2 win over Chicago.
May 30, 1935
Braves left fielder Babe Ruth played his final game, going hitless in his only at-bat as the Phillies beat the Boston Braves, 11-6, before 18,000 fans at Baker Bowl, first game of a doubleheader. Ironically his first World Series appearance was against the Phillies at Baker Bowl, Game 1, Oct. 8, 1915.
June 11, 1985
The Phillies¡¯ greatest offensive game ever ... 26-7 win over the New York Mets began with a nine-run first inning, highlighted by left fielder Von Hayes' two home runs, a solo shot and a grand slam. No other Phillies player ever hit two homers in the first inning.
July 13, 1915
The Phillies beat the Cardinals in St. Louis, 8-0, to take over National League lead, which they held for remainder of season. Grover Cleveland Alexander won his ninth game in a row, his second-longest winning streak with the Phillies.
July 25, 2015
Cole Hamels pitched the 13th no-hitter in franchise history, 5-0, against the Cubs in Wrigley Field. He walked two and struck out 13. It was his last start for the Phillies as he was traded six days later.
July 27, 1935
Second baseman Jose ¡°Chile¡± Gomez, a native of Mexico, became the first Hispanic player to appear in a Phillies uniform. He was hitless in four at-bats in a 5-0 win over the Braves in Boston.
July 30, 1995
With the largest crowd, an estimated 28,000, ever to attend the ceremony, Mike Schmidt and Richie Ashburn are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Cooperstown, N.Y., was a sea of red that weekend.
Aug. 5, 1975
The Phillies set a Major League record by getting eight hits in a row at the start of the first inning (four singles, two doubles, two homers -- Garry Maddox/Mike Schmidt) in a 13-5 win over the Chicago Cubs at the Vet. The 10-run outburst, that also included two more singles, three walks, a passed ball and a balk) was the Phillies¡¯ biggest first inning since 1948.

It¡¯s the end of an era as Chase Utley is traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for INF/OF Darnell Sweeney and RHP John Richy. A member of five National League East division champions (2007-11), two NL pennant winners (2008-09) and the 2008 World Series championship team, Utley left the Phillies after 13 seasons with six NL All-Star selections and four Silver Slugger Awards.
Aug. 25, 1955
Between games of a doubleheader with St. Louis, the Phillies honored Del Ennis for driving in more runs than any player in team history. Ennis was presented with gifts including a Cadillac, TV, air conditioner, freezer, diamond ring and fishing outfit. The Phils won both games, with Ennis adding four more RBIs to his then record total.
Aug. 29, 1885
Twenty-two-year-old right-handed pitcher Charlie Ferguson tossed the first no-hitter in Phillies history, a 1-0 win over Providence at Recreation Park. In his four-year career, all with the Phillies, he finished 99-64 with a 2.67 ERA before dying of typhoid fever two weeks after his 25th birthday.

Right-hander Jim Bunning¡¯s fifth-inning strikeout of Cubs shortstop Jimmy Stewart was his 242nd of the season, breaking the single-season club record held by Hall of Fame right-hander Grover Cleveland Alexander (241, 1915).

Center fielder Richie Ashburn was hitless in seven at-bats in a season-ending doubleheader at the Polo Grounds, but still easily won his first batting title (.338).

The Phillies clinched their first NL pennant with a 5-0 win at Boston, a one-hitter for Grover Cleveland Alexander, his 31st win. It was his fourth one-hitter and 12th shutout of the season.
Oct. 2, 1965
Left-handed pitcher Chris Short set a club record by striking out 18 Mets in 15 innings at Shea Stadium. The second game of a doubleheader ended after 18 innings in a scoreless tie.
Oct. 8, 1915
In the first World Series game in franchise history, Grover Cleveland Alexander threw a complete game to give the Phillies a 3-1 win over the Boston Red Sox at Baker Bowl. Twenty-year-old Babe Ruth, a left-handed pitcher who had 18 wins during the season, was used as a pinch-hitter, his only appearance in the series and the first of a long career.

Woodrow Wilson became the first president to throw out the first ball at a World Series game, but the Phils lost Game 2 to Boston, 2-1, at the Baker Bowl.
Nov. 2, 2005
President David Montgomery hired Pat Gillick as general manager. The Phillies won their second World Series championship three years later.
