Nov. 13: Rangers sign RHP Luis Curvelo to a Major League deal
Curvelo, who is seeking his MLB debut, spent all of the 2024 season with Double-A Arkansas in the Mariners organization. He ranked among Texas League leaders in holds (14, first), games (49, second), WHIP (0.86, third) and ERA (2.57, 11th).
The right-hander signed with Seattle as an international free agent on May 22, 2018. Across six Minor League seasons, he has posted a 3.51 ERA in 189 games. The Rangers' 40-man roster is now at 37.
Nov. 2: RHP David Robertson declines his side of his 2025 mutual option, becoming a free agent
The mutual option was $7 million with a $1.5 million buyout. The 39-year-old Robertson was one of the Rangers¡¯ high-leverage arms in 2024, posting a 3.00 ERA across 68 relief appearances in his 16th MLB season. The veteran right-hander compiled 99 strikeouts in 72 innings, both of which were the most of any full-time Texas reliever.
Oct. 31: RHP Max Scherzer, RHP Kirby Yates, LHP Andrew Heaney, RHP José Leclerc, RHP Jos¨¦ Ure?a, OF Travis Jankowski, C Carson Kelly become free agents
These players became free agents the day after the conclusion of the World Series. There is a five-day ¡°quiet period¡± in which free agents may negotiate only with their team. Free agents can sign with any team afterwards.
Oct. 31: Rangers claim RHP Roansy Contreras off waivers from Angels
Contreras posted a 4.35 ERA over 49 games (three starts) for the Pirates and the Angels in 2024. Across four Major League seasons, the right-hander has compiled a 4.72 ERA in 234 2/3 innings across 90 games (33 starts). Contreras figures to factor into the Rangers' bullpen going into Spring Training, with competition expected to be wide open across the board.
INJURY UPDATES
3B Josh Jung (right wrist tendinitis)
Expected return: 2025
Jung missed the majority of the year with a fractured right wrist after being hit with a pitch just four games into the regular season. Throughout his rehab, Jung endured discomfort near the surgical site, which slowed his progress until he returned to the active roster on July 29.
That discomfort returned. Jung last played on Sept. 18 against Toronto at Globe Life Field. The hope was for him to return to the lineup during the final road trip of the season, but he instead visited his surgeon in Arizona on Sept. 26 to get a CT scan and figure out the best course of action for the offseason.
Jung hit .264/.298/.421 in 46 games in 2024, but before fracturing his wrist, he was without a doubt the Rangers¡¯ best hitter after going 7-for-17 with two walks, one double, one triple and two homers over the first four games. More >> (Last updated: Sept. 24)
RHP Tyler Mahle (right shoulder stiffness)
Expected return: 2025
Mahle returned to the big leagues in 2024 after a long Tommy John rehab. In his first three starts, he allowed seven runs in 12 2/3 innings, striking out 10 and walking four. His velocity was slightly down in his last start against the Twins, but the Rangers weren¡¯t initially concerned after he landed on the injured list with right shoulder stiffness.
Mahle, 29, is under contract through the 2025 season. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on Sept. 24. (Last updated: Sept. 24)
SS Corey Seager (sports hernia)
Expected return: 2025
Seager, who was placed on the 10-day IL with hip discomfort on Sept. 4, underwent surgery on Sept. 13 to treat a sports hernia on his right side, ending his season. It's the same procedure he underwent on his left side in January; barring complications, he will be back at full strength by Spring Training. More >> (Last updated: Sept. 20)
RHP Jon Gray (right foot neuroma)
Expected return: 2025
Gray had two injured list stints in 2024, but both were groin-related. According to the Mayo Clinic, a foot neuroma is ¡°a condition that affects the ball of your foot, that makes it feel as if you are standing on a pebble in your shoe. It involves the thickening of the tissue around one of the nerves leading to your toes, causing a sharp pain in the ball of your foot.¡±
Gray, 32, struggled through much of the season, posting a 4.47 ERA in 102 2/3 innings. He is under contract through the 2025 season. (Last updated: Sept. 3)
OF Evan Carter (lower back soreness)
Expected return: 2025
Carter, who was transferred to the 60-day IL on July 29, missed the remainder of the season after an exam by a specialist revealed his sore back needs more rest.
Carter missed seven games from May 11-17 with back soreness, but he initially returned without an IL stint. The Rangers then placed Carter on the injured list on May 28. While a return looked possible when he rejoined the club around the All-Star break and ramped up activities, Carter didn't feel healthy enough for a rehab stint, which prompted the shutdown. RHP Cole Winn (right shoulder sprain)
Expected return: 2025
The Rangers announced on June 23 that Winn would go to the Major League 15-day IL with right shoulder discomfort, retroactive to June 18. Winn was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on June 18, but informed the club that he was experiencing shoulder discomfort after he rejoined the Express. Team doctors then determined that he had a right shoulder sprain, and he was moved to the 60-day IL on June 26.
His last outing before the injury was with the big league club, so his option is now voided. (Last updated: June 26)
RHP Carson Coleman (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: 2025
Coleman was selected by the Rangers in the 2023 Rule 5 Draft from the Yankees. He did not pitch in 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. In 2022, Coleman was named the Eastern League ¡°Reliever of the Year¡± after going 2-3 with 15 saves and a 2.86 ERA across 35 relief appearances for Double-A Somerset. (Last updated: March 9)
