John Schuerholz

General Manager 1982-1990
Having joined the Royals before they had ever played a game, John Schuerholz was the team builder that put Kansas City at the top of the baseball world. He arrived in 1968 as a baseball administrative assistant in the Royals first front office and went on to serve in nearly every role in scouting and player development. Named General Manager in 1981, he was at the helm when the ballclub won its fifth AL West title in 1984. The team he put together in 1985 delivered the ballclub¡¯s first World Series Championship. Schuerholz¡¯s 2017 Cooperstown enshrinement made permanent his impact as one of the game¡¯s greatest General Managers ¨C a role he first stepped into in Kansas City with the Royals.

NOTES: Schuerholz was the third General Manager in Royals history, serving in that role from 1981 through 1990. He joined the organization as it was formed in 1968 as American League expansion club to begin play in 1969.
His baseball career began as an administrative assistant in baseball operations for his hometown Baltimore Orioles. Schuerholz played soccer and baseball at his alma mater Towson State University and was named 1962 Athlete of the Year at the school.
Following his years with the Royals, he served as General Manager of the Atlanta Braves from 1991 through 2007 - then as Club President through 2016.
He was the first General Manager to win a World Series Championship for both an American League and National League club. Schuerholz was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2017.
