Catcher Agust¨ªn Ram¨ªrez, who was one of three prospects acquired by the Marlins in the Jazz Chisholm Jr. trade last summer with the Yankees, was called up by the Marlins on Monday. The 23-year-old will start behind the plate and bat sixth against the Reds at loanDepot park tonight at 6:40 p.m. ET.
Ranked as the Marlins' No. 4 prospect per MLB Pipeline, Ram¨ªrez batted .254/.313/.479 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 19 games for Triple-A Jacksonville.
Ram¨ªrez was called up after the club placed catcher Rob Brantly on the 10-day injured list with a right lat strain. In other moves, right-hander George Soriano was recalled from Jacksonville and left-hander Cade Gibson was optioned.
When the trade went down, this was MLB Pipeline's scouting report on Ram¨ªrez: "With his short right-handed stroke, bat speed and strength, Ramirez makes consistent contact and produces impressive exit velocities. Ramirez stands out much more for his offensive upside than his defensive prowess. Some scouts believe he'll wind up at first base."
In the deal for Chisholm, the Marlins also acquired infielders Jared Serna (Miami's No. 15 prospect) and Abrahan Ramirez (ranked 20th).
