SEATTLE -- That time of year is almost here, as the Mariners prepare to report to Arizona for Spring Training.
Here are some questions ahead of camp as they prepare to overcome another disappointing finish, coming just short of the postseason for the second year in a row.
When is the first workout?
Feb. 13: First workout for pitchers and catchers
Feb. 18: First full-squad workout
Where is the team¡¯s facility?
The Peoria Sports Complex is located in the West Valley of the greater Phoenix area, about 20 miles northwest of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. It¡¯s at 16101 N. 83rd Ave., Peoria, Ariz., 85382.
Can fans attend workouts?
Yes, workouts are free and open to the public. The Mariners¡¯ back fields in Peoria are among the most accessible in the league.
Who are some new faces fans should know?
The Mariners signed two free agents this offseason, but only one of them is a new face. They signed third baseman Donovan Solano to a one-year, $3.5 million deal on Jan. 13. After declining the option for infielder Jorge Polanco after last season, they re-signed him on Feb. 3 to a one-year deal for 2025 with a vesting option for ¡¯26. Polanco will get most of the time at third, so Solano will be in the mix at first, second and third base, with the chance to contribute at designated hitter.
Who are some of the top prospects invited to Major League camp?
Five members of MLB Pipeline¡¯s Top 100 have been invited to Major League camp for the Mariners: infielder Colt Emerson (No. 20), outfielder Lazaro Montes (No. 42), infielder Cole Young (No. 49), catcher Harry Ford (No. 65) and shortstop Michael Arroyo (No. 98).
Emerson, the Mariners¡¯ 2023 first-rounder, dominated at Single-A Modesto last season, slashing .293/.440/.427 in 40 games before earning a callup to High-A Everett. Young, the club¡¯s 2022 first-rounder, has raked at every level he's played in the Minors, reaching Double-A Arkansas in '24 and hitting .271 with a .759 OPS. Ford, who slashed .249/.377/.367 at Double-A in '24, is still learning to tap into his power but his athleticism is his biggest asset moving forward.
When is the team¡¯s first Cactus League game?
As they do most years, the Mariners open their spring slate against the Padres, the club that they share the Peoria Sports Complex with, on Friday, Feb. 21, with first pitch slated for 12:10 p.m. PT.
What are a few other notable spring games?
The opener against the Padres is always a fun one, but that should be particularly true this year given that San Diego is coming off another postseason appearance and enters the year among a handful of World Series favorites. They also play the defending champion Dodgers just four days later, on Feb. 25 at Camelback Ranch. Beyond those, Seattle¡¯s games against the AL West in spring are always worth watching, too, to gauge how they stack up against the rest of the division.
What is Spring Breakout and when is the game?
After much success in its debut last year, MLB Spring Breakout is back for 2025. The multi-day event showcases baseball¡¯s future -- the current stars of Minor League Baseball. A sizable 71 of MLB Pipeline¡¯s Top 100 overall prospects last year participated.
This year¡¯s edition will be held from March 13-16 at Grapefruit and Cactus League stadiums, featuring a series of 16 exhibition games between teams composed of each organization's top 20-25 prospects. The goal is to create a new touchpoint on the baseball calendar that celebrates the sport¡¯s budding talent.
The Mariners¡¯ Spring Breakout game is on Friday, March 14, against the Guardians at Goodyear Ballpark.
Will the team¡¯s games be televised?
TBD. The Mariners are still in the process of finalizing their TV production plan. Fans can also watch games on MLB.TV.
When is the club¡¯s last game in Arizona?
Monday, March 24, against the Padres in Peoria.
Will there be any additional exhibitions before the regular season?
Unlike last year, where the Mariners played two exhibition games at the Padres¡¯ Petco Park in San Diego, the Mariners will not have any other exhibitions leading up to the regular season.
What are the details for Opening Day?
Thursday, March 27, at 7:10 p.m. PT against the Athletics at T-Mobile Park.
