KANSAS CITY -- The Padres¡¯ starting rotation will be in scramble mode for the foreseeable future with right-handers Joe Musgrove and Yu Darvish both landing on the 15-day injured list.
The Padres recalled right-hander Randy V¨¢squez from Triple-A El Paso ahead of Saturday's 7-3 victory over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium, and right-hander Logan Gillaspie was also recalled from the Chihuahuas to fortify the bullpen.
The Darvish move is retroactive to May 30, and Musgrove¡¯s status is retroactive to May 29. The Darvish development had become a possibility after Darvish left his last start against Miami with left hamstring tightness. The concern surrounding Musgrove came after he felt elbow discomfort during his last side session.
¡°On the last pitch of Joe¡¯s last side [session], he felt some inflammation in the back of the elbow,¡± manager Mike Shildt said. ¡°He¡¯ll continue to get imaging. We have baselines, but structurally we feel like everything is good. It¡¯s just that the repetitiveness with the elbow is not letting him finish pitches like he needs to finish. We¡¯ll give him another break from it and hopefully get him back sooner rather than later.¡±

Shildt said it¡¯s likely the Padres will call up a pitcher to take Darvish¡¯s scheduled Tuesday start against the Angels.
¡°The feedback [on Darvish] is that it¡¯s better, but we know those [groin/hamstring] areas can be tricky,¡± Shildt said. ¡°We want to make sure we get it behind him.¡±
Darvish was 4-3 with a 3.20 ERA over 56 1/3 innings this season, and Musgrove had pitched to a 5.66 ERA over 49 1/3 innings, but Shildt is confident his club will adjust with 40 percent of the starting rotation in temporary flux.
¡°We¡¯ve had challenges already this year,¡± Shildt said. ¡°The challenges are what ultimately define you.¡±
