The MLB Spring Breakout showcase returns with 16 games across the Cactus League and Grapefruit League from March 13-16. What is Spring Breakout?

MLB Spring Breakout is a four-day event showcasing baseball¡¯s future: the current stars of Minor League Baseball. The second edition will be held from March 13-16 at Grapefruit and Cactus League stadiums during Spring Training. Sixteen exhibition games will be played between teams comprised of each MLB organization¡¯s top prospects, creating a new touchpoint on the baseball calendar that celebrates the sport¡¯s budding talent.

The Astros¡¯ Spring Breakout game will be against the Nationals¡¯ top prospects on Friday, March 14, at 1:05 p.m. CT at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Which position players are expected to play?

The headliner among Astros position players who are expected to play in the Spring Breakout game is third baseman Cam Smith, Houston¡¯s lone Top-100 prospect (No. 58). Smith, whom the Astros received in the trade that sent Kyle Tucker to the Cubs, was selected 14th overall in last year¡¯s Draft by Chicago. In his first pro season, he posted a 1.005 OPS with seven home runs across three levels (Class A, High-A and Double-A).

Other names to watch for among Astros position-player prospects include shortstop Brice Matthews (Houston¡¯s No. 2 prospect), outfielder Jacob Melton (No. 3) and catcher Walker Janek (No. 4).

Which pitching prospects are expected to play?

On the mound, you could see a trio of right-handers among the Astros¡¯ top 10 prospects -- Miguel Ullola (No. 6), Anderson Brito (No. 7) and Ethan Pecko (No. 10).

Ullola, 22, struck out 31% of the batters he faced over 130 1/3 innings between Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Sugar Land in 2024, posting a 4.28 ERA. Between the Dominican Summer League, the Florida Complex League and Single-A Fayetteville, Brito had a 1.51 ERA and 39% strikeout rate over 53 2/3 innings in his first taste of pro ball. And Pecko turned in a 3.47 ERA across three levels.
