Senior Vice President and General Manager
Matt Arnold, 46, enters his 10th season with the Brewers, fifth as general manager and third leading the organization¡¯s baseball operations. He was named the 10th general manager in franchise history on November 19, 2020 and was promoted to head baseball operations on October 27, 2022. He originally joined the Brewers as vice president and assistant general manager on October 14, 2015.
In his nine seasons in the organization (2016-24), Arnold has helped Milwaukee to the third-best winning percentage in the National League (739-618, .545), six postseason berths (2018-21, 2023-24) and four National League Central Division titles (2018, 2021, 2023-24).
Arnold was named 2024 MLB Executive of the Year, an award voted on by executives from all 30 clubs prior to the start of the postseason, becoming the first Brewers executive to earn the honor. Arnold was also named 2024 MLB Executive of the Year by Baseball America and The Sporting News.
Arnold constructed a roster in 2024 that went 93-69, finishing in first place in the National League Central division for the second consecutive season, 10.0 games ahead of the Cardinals and Cubs. The Brewers tied the Padres for the fourth-best record in baseball, trailing only the Dodgers (98-64), Phillies (95-67) and Yankees (94-68). He made a series of key decisions that contributed to the successful season, including hiring 2024 National League Manager of the Year Pat Murphy and signing outfielder Jackson Chourio to an industry-record contract for a player without prior Major League experience.
Prior to joining the Brewers, Arnold spent nine seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays, assisting then Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman and President of Baseball Operations Matt Silverman with player acquisitions, contract negotiations and player evaluations at all levels. His responsibilities also included strategic planning, foreign and domestic special assignments and coordinating advance scouting for the postseason. Additionally, he worked to develop the process of integrating science, biomechanics and human movement analysis within all levels of baseball operations. During his time in Tampa Bay, the Rays won over 90 games in five of six years from 2008 to 2013 and qualified for the postseason four times (2008, 2010-11, 2013), including the team¡¯s first World Series appearance in 2008.
Arnold transitioned to Tampa Bay as a professional scout following the 2006 season after nearly five years in the Cincinnati Reds front office. During his tenure with the Rays, he was promoted to director of professional scouting in November 2009 and to director of player personnel in June 2015.
Arnold, who has 24 seasons of professional baseball experience, has also served roles with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2000), Texas Rangers (2002) and Cincinnati Reds (2003-06). In Cincinnati, Arnold served as assistant director of professional scouting with his duties including player analysis, financial planning and arbitration, and he was also involved in advance, amateur and professional scouting.
Originally from California, Arnold graduated from the University of California-Santa Barbara with a bachelor¡¯s degree in economics in 2001. He merited academic honors, including Sport Management Student of the Year.
