Married to the former Tewuy Iriarte (11/24/00)...Has 2 children, daughter Kewuy (11/9/96) and son Jorge Jr. (11/25/99)...Was signed by Montreal as a non-drafted free agent on February 14, 1996...Was signed by Expos scout Carlos Acosta...Attended Fundacion Bolivariana school in Caracas, Venezuela.
2006
Julio was acquired from the Mets for Orlando Hernandez on May 24, and shortly thereafter stepped into the closer's role. However, he later lost that role to former closer Jose Valverde the last third of the season. Julio went a combined 2-4 with a 4.23 ERA between New York and Arizona. With the D-backs, he recorded 15 saves in 19 opportunities.
2005
Julio had trouble making the transition to a set-up man and endured the most trying year of his career. Julio was 3-1 with a 5.05 ERA away from Camden Yards and he struck out 58 batters in 71 2/3 innings. Julio's best month was July, when he compiled a 2.19 ERA in 10 outings.
2004
Recorded 22 saves in 26 opportunities, his 3rd straight season with 20 or more saves...Became only the 3rd Oriole ever to notch 20 or more saves in 3 seasons, joining Gregg Olson (5 times, 1989-93) and Stu Miller (3 times, 1963-65). Led the team and tied for 7th in the American League in saves...Ranked 5th in the AL with 50 games finished, also a club high. Appeared in 65 games and pitched a career-high 69.0 innings...Suffered only 4 blown saves, 3 of them coming against Tampa Bay. Pitched to a 2.37 ERA and held opponents to a .165 batting average in 30 games on the road, but posted a 6.28 ERA and .269 opponents average at Camden Yards. The only run he allowed in his first 12 appearances of the season came on a 9th-inning, game-tying pinch-hit home run by Robert Fick on April 9 at Tampa Bay in his first save opportunity of the season. Converted his next 8 save chances before allowing a game-tying run in the 9th on June 4 vs. Tampa Bay...Then had a string of 11 straight saves, June 6 through August 29. Was charged with his 3rd blown save on August 31 at Tampa Bay when he allowed a 2-out gametying home run by Aubrey Huff in the 9th. His only other blown save came on September 21 at Boston...Converted all 4 save opportunities vs. Seattle and had at least one save against every AL team except Anaheim and Oakland, against whom he made only one appearance each. Earned a win and 2 saves vs. Cleveland, May 7-9...His win on May 7 vs. the Tribe was his first since 8/22/02, breaking a string of 8 straight losses. Took the loss on May 14 vs. Anaheim, allowing a run in the 10th inning after the O's came back from 9-run deficit to tie the game, 9-9. Beginning on May 27, allowed runs in 6 straight outings, capped by his appearance vs. San Francisco on June 12 in which he yielded 4 runs in the 11th inning of the opener of a doubleheader and took his 2nd loss of the season. Pitched 2.0 scoreless innings and struck out a career-high 4 batters on July 2 at Philadelphia...Pitched more than one inning on 9 occasions. Earned a save and a win in a day-night doubleheader vs. Seattle on August 3, then picked up the save the next day vs. the Mariners as well...The save on August 3 was his first opportunity since July 24. Earned his 20th save on September 3 at New York by striking out all 3 batters...Two days later, entered a tie game against the Yankees in the 9th inning and walked 4 batters, including the winning run, while retiring only one batter. Took the loss on September 12 vs. New York after he entered a 7-7 tie in the 9th and allowed backto- back home runs to Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui to start the inning. Drew a suspension after hitting Minnesota's Augie Ojeda with a pitch and getting ejected by umpire Ron Kulpa on September 7...Hit batter came after he allowed a 2-run tie-breaking homer to Michael Cuddyer in the 9th to take the loss. Served the suspension, September 24-27, and worked in 4 games over the final 5 days of the season following his return. Beginning with his blown save at Tampa Bay on August 31, allowed 13 runs in his last 16 outings spanning 15.0 innings, with 9 of the 13 runs coming via 5 home runs. Passed Eddie Watt and Randy Myers to move into 4th on the Orioles' all-time saves list with 83 in 4 seasons. Played for La Guaira Tiburones in the Venezuelan Winter League...Went 0-0 with a 2.79 ERA in 8 games.
2003
Spent his second consecutive season as the Orioles' closer, finishing fourth in the American League with 36 saves ... Also finished sixth in the league with 51 games finished ... Worked a season-high 2.0 innings on Opening Day, striking out three ... Recorded 18 saves both before and after the All-Star break ... Julio's best month was July, when he posted a 2.53 ERA and saved eight games in 10 chances.
2002
Led major league rookies with 25 saves...Was 2 shy of the club-rookie record of 27 saves held by Gregg Olson, set in 1989, despite not having a save opportunity after August 15...His 27 saves was the 7th highest total ever by a major league rookie...Finished 3rd in the American League Rookie of the Year voting, behind TorontoCs Eric Hinske and team-mate Rodrigo Lopez...Became the first American League pitcher 23 or younger with more than 20 saves in a season since Olson did it in back-to-back years in 1989 and 1990...Pitched with a lead or tie in all but 11 outings...Held lead or tie in 47 of 56 situations given to him, including 41 of 47 leads...His 1.99 ERA ranked 4th among AL relievers...Also finished 4th in the league with 61 games finished...Opposing batters hit only .213 (55-218) off him, 10th best in AL...Tied Rick Bauer for team lead and for 5th in AL with 6 relief losses. ..Went 2-0 with 7 saves in 8 opportunities and had a 0.96 ERA in his first 16 games through May 10...Over his next 9 outings, May 11-June 2, went 0-4 with 2 saves in 4 chances and a 11.57 ERA (7.0 IP,9 ER)...From June 3 to the end of the season, he appeared in 42 games and registered 16 saves in 19 opportunities, going 3-2 with an 0.85 ERA (42.1 IP, 4 ER)...Went 22 straight games without allowing an earned run, June 3-July 30, going 2-1 with 10 saves in 11 attempts 22.2 IP, 13 H) over that time...Earned his first major league save on April 16 at New York with 1.2 innings of perfect relief...Suffered his first blown save on April 19 at Tampa Bay, allowing a game-tying home run by Bobby Smith in the 13th inning, but earned the win when the O's scored in the 14th...Registered saves in back-to-back wins vs. Boston, April 23-24...Was first of 6 times he earned saves in consecutive games...Suffered 2nd blown save and lost on May 11 at Tampa Bay on a game-winning, 9th inning 3-run home run by Randy Winn...Suffered his 3rd blown save and loss on May 14 at Cleveland, allowing a game-winning home run to Matt Lawton after a 2-out error extended the 9th inning...Was tagged with the loss in both of the Orioles' setbacks in Seattle series, May 30 and June 2...Over his next 35 appearances, June 3-August 30, he allowed one earned run in 36.0 IP. ..Earned the save on June 5 at NY, his first save since May 21...Earned the win on June 3 at NY with 1.2 scoreless innings...Earned the save in 3 straight outings, June 5-10, and earned the win on June 11 vs. San Diego after entering with score tied in the 10th...Earned the save in 3 straight games, closing June 22-23 wins at San Francisco & June 25 vs. New York...Suffered a blown save and a loss on July 5 at Texas, allowing 2 unearned runs in 1.2 innings...Snapped streaks of 14 scoreless outings and 8 straight saves...Earned his 24th save on August 10 at Detroit, the 2nd time he earned the save by getting one out...Also got a one-out save on June 7 vs. LA...Suffered his 6th blown save on an unearned run on August 14 at Minnesota, pitching 2 innings...Got final 2 outs for his 25th and final save on August 15 at Minnesota...Entered with a 2-2 tie in 10th on August 22 vs. Tampa Bay and pitched 2.0 scoreless innings for a 3-2 win...Entered with a 2-2 tie in the 10th on September 7 vs. Anaheim and took the loss, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits in 10th inning...Did not allow a run over his last 5 outings (4.1 IP)...Struck out all 3 batters he faced in the season's final inning on September 29 vs. New York...Went 0-1 with a 1.35 ERA and converted 10 of 12 save opportunities for La Guaira in the Venezuelan Winter League.

Worked out of bullpen from start of season and, in his first year in Orioles organization and first season above Class A, advanced to major leagues...Had 3 stints with the Orioles after starting the season at AA Bowie...Allowed runs in each of his first 2 big league appearances following the purchase of his contract on April 24...Did not allow an earned run in 13 of his last 16 outings for the Orioles, pitching to a 1.80 ERA (20.0 IP, 7R/4 ER)...Allowed 2 earned runs over his last 9 relief outings (12.1IP), both coming in his final 2 appearances of the season October 5 & 6 vs. Boston...He had worked 11.2 consecutive scoreless innings over 7 outings from September 2 through October 3...Earned his first major league win August 23 at Tampa Bay, preserving a tie with 0.2 inning pitched...Became the 6th Orioles pitcher to earn his first big league victory during 2001, setting a new club record...Took the loss September 18 at Toronto, allowing a 3-run home run to Alex Gonzalez in 8th inning that broke a 5-5 tie...All 3 runs were unearned...His contract was first purchased on April 24 from AA Bowie when John Bale was optioned to AAA Rochester...He pitched in 2 games before being optioned to Bowie on May 3...In his major league debut April 26 at Detroit, he allowed 3 runs (2ER) on 2 hits in 0.1 inning...He gave up 3 runs in his second appearance, May 2 vs. Tampa Bay...Was promoted from Bowie to AAA Rochester on May 16 before being promoted to the O's a second time on July 18 for what was supposed to be Game 2 of a day-night doubleheader vs. Texas...That game, as well as contests the next 2 days were postponed following a train derailment near Camden Yards...He made one relief appearance before being optioned back to Rochester on July 24...Was recalled on August 18 from Rochester and remained with the Orioles for remainder of the season...Combined to go 1-2 with 19 saves and a 3.07 ERA in 46 games at the minor league level (55.2IP, 44H, 28R/19ER, 21BB, 62K)...Had 7 saves and a 0.73 ERA in 12 games at AA Bowie and was 1-2 with 12 saves and a 3.74 ERA in 34 games for Rochester...Converted 12 of 15 saves for Rochester and led Red Wings in saves...Pitched for La Guaria in the Venezuelan Winter League following the season.
