Returning from hip surgery, Minter sets sights on Opening Day
NEW YORK 每 The Mets are hoping that A.J. Minter can be a quality left-hander at the back end of the bullpen. That*s why they signed him to a two-year deal worth $22 million with a player opt-out after the 2025 season.
The question, however, is whether Minter will be ready for Opening Day on March 27 against the Astros. He had left hip surgery last August, and he has yet to throw off a mound since. Last year, Minter was limited to 39 games, but had a 2.62 ERA with 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings.
※The goal is to be ready for Opening Day, hopefully,§ Minter said. ※With that being said, my hip does feel really good. I*m happy where I am. I don*t want to put a date on it. # The Mets are going to have their protocols. They want me to take it day by day. But for me, personally, my goal is to be ready close to Opening Day.§
During his eight-year career 每 spent entirely with the Braves 每 Minter, 31, has posted a 3.28 ERA with 36 saves, 114 holds and 422 strikeouts. Since 2022, Minter is one of 11 pitchers in the Majors to post an ERA below 3.00 and a strikeout percentage over 30 percent (min. 150 appearances). Additionally, he has a 1.98 second-half ERA, the seventh-lowest since 2022 (min. 60 outings).
Minter hopes for a chance to face the Braves in Atlanta during a three-game series from June 17-19 at Truist Park. The Braves hold a special place in his heart. After all, Minter helped them win a World Series title in 2021 over the Astros.
※But at the same time, I*m here to beat them,§ Minter said. ※It*s that competition, but, yes, it*s exciting to go back there.§
