NEW YORK -- Mets pitcher David Peterson left Sunday¡¯s 2-1 victory over the Blue Jays after feeling nauseous in the fifth inning.
New York had a 2-0 lead over Toronto in the fifth inning, but it was confusing as to why Peterson remained in the game to face two more batters after walking Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to put runners on first and third and showing physical signs of discomfort. Peterson was bent over before a trainer and manager Carlos Mendoza went to the mound to check on him.
¡°We went out there and he said he felt like he [was] punched in the stomach and had blurry vision. Physically, he is fine,¡± Mendoza said.
Peterson stayed in the game and didn¡¯t have full extension on his pitches. He walked Anthony Santander to load the bases and hit Andr¨¦s Gim¨¦nez with a pitch, which allowed Tyler Heineman to score and cut the Mets' lead to 2-1. Peterson was then replaced by right-hander Max Kranick, who was able to get out of the bases-loaded jam by inducing Alejandro Kirk to pop up to catcher Hayden Senger to end the threat.
Peterson said he wasn¡¯t under the weather prior to the game nor during the game until facing Guerrero in the fifth.
¡°I threw a pitch. I got the ball back. The vision just went blurry. Then the vision started to come back. My stomach turned over on me. I just felt worse with every breath I took,¡± Peterson said.
Peterson said he is feeling better. He was able to get some food in his stomach, and the doctors looked at him and were not concerned.
¡°It¡¯s not something that I ever had. Hopefully, it¡¯s one-and-done and just move on,¡± he said.
