WEST SACRAMENTO -- Jose Siri propped his crutches against the gray wall of the visitors¡¯ clubhouse at Sutter Health Park and listened to the first question of his postgame media session: ¡°Jose, how much pain are you currently in right now?¡±
¡°A lot,¡± Siri said through an interpreter. ¡°A lot.¡±
The Mets¡¯ center fielder had an early exit to Saturday afternoon¡¯s 3-1 loss to the Athletics after fouling a ball off his left shin, just below the knee, in the second inning. X-rays were negative and Siri is day to day with a contusion, but he¡¯s nowhere near full strength.
¡°It got me right there, right on the bone pretty much, so right now, I don¡¯t feel like I have any power in that leg,¡± Siri said postgame.
Considering Siri was on the ground in pain for several minutes after the injury, had to be carted to the clubhouse between innings and needed crutches to get around afterward, a contusion is better than some of the Mets thought initially.
¡°Honestly, I was expecting the worst,¡± manager Carlos Mendoza said. ¡°When I went out there, he was in pain. He couldn¡¯t put any weight, and I was like, ¡®Man.¡¯¡±
But team trainers relayed the news to Mendoza later in the game: Siri had avoided a fracture.
Whether he can avoid a stint on the injured list remains to be seen. Siri said the injury was a new one to him and that it was too soon to tell whether he could avoid the IL.
¡°I think what we should do is just wait and see how it feels in the next few days, and then we¡¯ll have a better understanding of it,¡± he said.
The speedy, slick-fielding Siri was a spark plug for the Mets in Friday night¡¯s 7-6 win, working a nine-pitch walk and speeding home from third base on a shallow fly ball to right field, catching A¡¯s outfielder Lawrence Butler by surprise. Acquired from Tampa Bay in the offseason, Siri has gone 1-for-20 at the plate in 2025.
If Siri is out for a long period, Tyrone Taylor -- who replaced Siri in Saturday¡¯s contest -- will receive more reps in center field. Mendoza said there¡¯s no current need for Siri to undergo additional testing after the injury, but that could change.
¡°We¡¯ll see where he¡¯s at tomorrow and in the next few days, and then if we need to, we¡¯ll make that decision,¡± Mendoza said.
