Mets sing, dance to soundtrack of their success: Iglesias' single 'OMG'
It's safe to say the vibes are high for the Mets right now. To the outside observer, perhaps their season turned around the moment that furry purple mascot Grimace took the ball in his hand (paw?) to throw out the first pitch on June 12. But inside the clubhouse, there's another reason for the sudden upward trajectory -- a soundtrack for success, if you will.
Since Jose Iglesias had a three-hit game in his second start for the club on June 3 -- Grimace aside, the Mets are actually 15-4 from this date -- the team has been bumping his new single "OMG" in the clubhouse after wins. On Tuesday they all had OMG T-shirts at their lockers, with a QR code on the sleeve linking to Iglesias' music. This was all to promote the new single, which drops everywhere on Friday and which Iglesias performed live on Thursday alongside a host of Mets players dancing alongside him during an event at Citi Field.
Just watch as Iglesias is mobbed by Francisco Lindor and other teammates when the chorus hits.
"This is all about energy. This is all about winning," Iglesias told SNY's Steve Gelbs in an interview ahead of the release. "The guys loved it and I'm very humble to make this song. The fans were clicking with it. We're on a roll, everything is right where it needs to be, and oh my god I'm so happy."
Iglesias says the song is about living in the moment, "the possibility of enjoyment," and being thankful for everything you're blessed with. It's no wonder a song with that type of message has become something of an anthem for the Mets during this run.
The veteran infielder is not new to the music scene. In February, during Spring Training with the Mets, he released a single with Cuban musician Lenier called "No Voy A Volver,¡± which caught the attention of his teammates at the time.
¡°I was like, ¡®Bro, you actually sound pretty good,¡¯¡± Mark Vientos said then. ¡°I was surprised. I didn¡¯t know that.¡±
As of early March, that song had racked up nearly 1.7 million views on YouTube and another 137,000 streams on Spotify.
Iglesias is surely hoping "OMG" sees similar success, and if his team keeps winning at its current pace, there's at least one place his song will be playing quite a lot.
