Jan. 24: Cubs showing 'significant interest' in Bregman (report)
The Cubs are believed to be showing "significant interest" in star free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman, according to a report from MLB Network insider Jon Heyman on Friday.
But they're not the only ones. Chicago has serious competition from the Astros, Bregman's team for his entire career. The Tigers and Red Sox are also interested in the two-time All-Star, per Heyman.
The Cubs have previously been floated as a potential fit for Bregman, and they've already swung a trade for Bregman's Houston teammate, All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker.
Jan. 24: Cubs' bullpen search includes Pressly, Est¨¦vez (reports)
The Cubs were reportedly one of the teams in the mix for Tanner Scott, but with the top closer on the free-agent market signing with the Dodgers, Chicago will have to turn elsewhere for bullpen help.
The Cubs have been connected to Astros right-hander Ryan Pressly, though Pressly has a full no-trade clause. According to a report from MLB Network insider Jon Heyman on Friday, Chicago is trying to land Pressly, who has told the Astros he's "disinclined" to go to a team in the East or West divisions but has not committed one way or the other on the Cubs.
According to MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi, Chicago is also one of the teams pursuing right-hander Carlos Est¨¦vez, one of the best remaining free-agent closers. The Blue Jays are also interested in Est¨¦vez.
Although young righty Porter Hodge had success closing for Chicago down the stretch in 2024, Est¨¦vez would give the club a pitcher with more experience in that role. The 32-year-old Est¨¦vez has collected 57 saves since the beginning of 2023.
Meanwhile, The Athletic reports (subscription required) that the club has been casting a wide net in terms of the relievers being considered, including David Robertson, Kenley Jansen, Phil Maton, Ryne Stanek and Brooks Raley.
Jan. 14: Cubs could become fit for Bregman (report)
With Alex Bregman still looking for a new home, the Cubs could become a potential landing spot if the third baseman pivots to considering short-term deals, according to Bruce Levine of 670 The Score.
Bregman has been tied most strongly to the Red Sox, Tigers, Blue Jays, Yankees and Mets, with MLB Network insider Jon Heyman calling Boston and Detroit the "most likely" landing spots as recently as last week.
But that has all been under the assumption that Bregman -- who turns 31 in March -- gets the long-term deal he's been seeking. With Spring Training starting in a month, however, he could decide to take a shorter deal -- and that's where the Cubs come in.
According to Levine's report, Chicago has touched base with Bregman's agent, Scott Boras. A potential deal could be somewhere in the neighborhood of three years with opt-outs after each season.
