Here is every Trade Deadline deal

August 1st, 2023

MLB.com tracked every deal made leading up to the Trade Deadline.

Aug. 1: Astros acquire RHP Justin Verlander and cash from Mets for OF Drew Gilbert and OF Ryan Clifford

Less than a season after Verlander left the Astros to sign with the Mets, the veteran right-hander is going back to Houston. Verlander pitched for the Astros from 2017-22 and won two of his three career Cy Young Awards as well as two World Series titles.

The 40-year-old came to the Mets in December on a two-year, $86.6 million deal that matched Max Scherzer*s contract for the highest average annual value in Major League history. The agreement includes a $35 million vesting option that becomes a player option if Verlander pitches at least 140 innings next year. The Mets will send $35 million to the Astros to cover some of Verlander's 2023-24 salary and an additional $17.5 million to Houston if Verlander's 2025 option vests, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

New York's return includes Houston's No. 1 (Gilbert) and No. 4 (Clifford) prospects. Gilbert, who ranks 68th on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 list, has hit .274 with 12 homers and an .822 OPS over 81 games in his first full professional season after being selected with a first-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft. The 22-year-old has spent most of this season in Double-A. Clifford, another 2022 MLB Draft pick (11th round), has posted a .291/.399/.520 slash with 18 homers over 83 games in the Minors this year, reaching High-A. Full story ?

Aug. 1: Orioles acquire RHP Jack Flaherty from Cardinals for INF C谷sar Prieto, LHP Drew Rom and RHP Zack Showalter

The AL East-leading Orioles acquired the 27-year-old Flaherty mere minutes before the Trade Deadline passed. The impending free agent had a 4.43 ERA, 106 strikeouts and 54 walks in 109 2/3 innings with the Cardinals. After enduring multiple injury-plagued seasons, Flaherty has exceeded 100 innings in a season for the first time since 2019. He*ll enhance an Orioles rotation that is middle of the pack by most measures.

Heading to St. Louis are two prospects who were ranked No. 16 (Prieto) and 18 (Rom) in the Orioles system according to MLB Pipeline, as well as Showalter. The Cardinals were one of the most active sellers at the deadline and continued to beef up their system with two players in the upper Minors. Prieto had an .868 OPS and just 27 strikeouts in 85 games across Double-A and Triple-A with Baltimore. Rom had a 5.34 ERA and 100 strikeouts in 86 innings in Triple-A. Full story ?

Aug. 1: Blue Jays acquire SS Paul DeJong and cash from Cardinals for RHP Matt Svanson

One day after Bo Bichette exited a game with a right knee injury, the Blue Jays acquired some insurance in DeJong, a seven-year veteran who has hit .233/.305/.426 with 115 homers as a big leaguer, spending his entire career with St. Louis. That includes a .233/.297/.412 slash with 13 homers over 81 games in 2023. The 29-year-old is in the final year of a six-year, $26 million contract but has club options for 2024 and 2025.

This is the second trade in a matter of days between the Cards and Blue Jays, who previously acquired reliever Jordan Hicks from St. Louis.

In exchange for DeJong, Toronto sends Svanson, a 13th-round Draft pick in 2021, to the Cards. The 24-year-old owns a 1.11 ERA with 39 K's over 32 1/3 innings in the Minors this season, reaching High-A. Full story ?

Lee, the Phillies' No. 5 prospect, has hit .283 since getting promoted to High-A, and is known for his advanced approach at the plate. He can play second base, shortstop and third base, but will likely stick at second base in the bigs. Full story ?

Aug. 1: Padres acquire RHP Scott Barlow from Royals for RHP Henry Williams

The Padres made a move to bolster their bullpen with Barlow, a 30-year-old right-hander who is under club control through the 2024 season. This has been an uneven season for Barlow, who posted a 5.35 ERA over 38 appearances for Kansas City while going 13-for-16 in save opportunities. Over his final 16 Royals appearances, he allowed 22 hits, 11 walks and 14 earned runs over 15 2/3 innings (8.04 ERA).

That being said, Barlow brings a solid track record with him to San Diego. From 2021-22, he made the ninth-most appearances in the Majors (140), to go along with a 2.30 ERA and 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings. If Barlow can get back on track, he could provide solid setup work for closer Josh Hader down the stretch. Full story ?

In one of the more fascinating moves of the Trade Deadline, the Marlins acquired Bell amidst various other moves the club was making. In his first year with the Guardians, Bell had a .701 OPS and 11 home runs in 97 games. This marks the fifth team for Bell in the past four seasons.

The Guardians received the veteran infielder Segura, who was subsequently released by the club. Segura was signed through the 2024 season. Perhaps most notable was the inclusion of Watson, the 16th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. Watson had a .727 OPS with nine home runs and 14 stolen bases in 60 games this year in the lower levels of the Minors with the Marlins. Full story ?

Aug. 1: Padres acquire LHP Rich Hill and 1B Ji Man Choi from Pirates for LHP Jackson Wolf, OF Estuar Suero and 1B Alfonso Rivas

Despite being the oldest player in Major League Baseball, the 43-year-old Hill has proven himself still capable of covering innings. Across 22 starts, Hill owns a 4.76 ERA and 4.46 FIP. Hill*s 119 innings are the second-most thrown by a Pirates starter this season.

A left Achilles strain in April cost Choi nearly three months of action, but since returning on July 7, the lefty batter has a .930 OPS with four home runs and a 140 wRC+.

The 6-foot-7 Wolf is the highlight of the return package for Pittsburgh. The Padres' No. 16 prospect possesses an above-average slider and curveball that play well off of his fastball, which ranges between 88-92 mph. He allowed three runs in a five-inning start during his MLB debut on July 22. He struck out 105 batters in 88 1/3 innings at Double-A San Antonio this year. Full story ?

A free agent at the end of this season, Middleton will provide depth to a Yankees bullpen that already features Wandy Peralta, Ian Hamilton, Michael King and Albert Abreu, in addition to closer Clay Holmes.

Carela has been in the Yankees* organization since 2019, but is still only 21 years old. At High-A in 2023, the starting pitcher currently has a 2-4 record and 3.67 ERA, along with 11.8 K/9 IP. Full story ?

Aug. 1: Rangers acquire C Austin Hedges from Pirates for international bonus pool money

In need of catching help with Jonah Heim on the IL, the Rangers swung a deal for one of the only notable backstops on the market. Hedges doesn't offer much with the bat, as he's a lifetime .189/.247/.323 hittter, but he's one of the best defensive catchers in the game. The Pirates signed him to a one-year, $5 million deal last offseason. Full story ?

Bickford will be a free agent at the end of this season.

Kolarek was originally a Mets Draft pick way back in 2010, and he was in New York*s organization from 2010-15, reaching as high as Triple-A. Falter, a 26-year-old starting pitcher who was drafted in 2015, looked to be a core part of the Phillies* future after he went 6-4 with a 3.86 ERA for the 2022 team that reached the World Series. Scherzer waived his no-trade clause and exercised his 2024 player option for $43.33 million. Scherzer had one of his best starts of the season on Friday night, holding the Nats to one run over seven innings with seven strikeouts, but the likely Hall of Famer has been uneven for most of the year, posting a 4.01 ERA with 121 strikeouts over 107 2/3 innings.

The Mets received infield prospect Luisangel Acu?a, the Rangers' No. 3 prospect per MLB Pipeline (No. 44 overall) and the younger brother of Braves superstar Ronald Acu?a Jr. The younger Acu?a had an .830 OPS with 42 stolen bases in 84 games with the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders. Full story ?

July 28: Astros acquire RHP Kendall Graveman from White Sox for C Korey Lee

For the second time in three years, Graveman has been acquired by the Astros at the Trade Deadline, as the club traded for the right-handed reliever at the 2021 Deadline when he was with the Mariners. Graveman turned a solid '21 showing with the Astros (3.13 ERA in 23 regular season innings, 1.64 ERA in 11 postseason innings) into a three-year, $24 million contract with the White Sox. He had a 3.30 ERA in 109 innings with the White Sox, and has a 4.00 career ERA in 629 2/3 innings.

Lee will head the other way after a four-year tenure in the Astros organization. The Astros selected Lee in the first round (No. 32 overall) of the 2019 Draft in the hopes he'd be their catcher of the future. He's hit .264 in 324 Minor League Games, and made his Major League debut last season, hitting .160 in 12 games. He's hitting .283 in 68 games at Triple-A this season. Full story ?

July 28: Dodgers acquire RHP Lance Lynn and RHP Joe Kelly from White Sox for RHP Nick Nastrini, RHP Jordan Leasure and OF Trayce Thompson

Despite moving back into first place in the National League West, the Dodgers entered the Deadline in desperate need for starting pitching thanks to injuries to Clayton Kershaw, Ryan Pepiot, Noah Syndergaard, Walker Buehler and Dustin May.

Enter Lynn, who, despite struggling for most of the season, is a veteran starter who, at the very least, will eat some innings. Lynn, who waived his no-trade clause to go to the Dodgers, is in the midst of the tough year (6-9, 6.47 ERA in 119 2/3 innings) but has a career 3.71 ERA across five different franchises.

This will be Kelly's second stint with the Dodgers, as he spent the 2019, '20 and '21 campaigns with the club, and allowed one run in 3 2/3 innings in the postseason in 2020. He, like Lynn, is having a bit of a down year (4.97 ERA in 29 innings), but he's in the 99th percentile in fastball velocity and as a walk rate of 9.4. He has a $9.5 million team option for next season with a $1 million buyout. He missed the middle of July with elbow inflammation, but was activated from the injured list on July 23.

The White Sox return is highlighted by Nastrini, who was ranked as the Dodgers' No. 9 prospect per MLB Pipeline. The 23-year-old has a fastball, slider, curveball and changeup, but has struggled with his command in the past. He has a 4.03 ERA in 73 2/3 innings in Double-A this season. Leasure is unranked by Pipeline, but has a 3.09 ERA in with 56 strikeouts in 35 relief innings in Double-A this season. Full story ?

July 28: Marlins acquire RHP David Robertson from Mets for INF Marco Vargas and C Ronald Hern芍ndez

The Marlins added another high-leverage option to their bullpen by acquiring Robertson. He's 14-for-17 in save opportunities in 2023, with a 2.05 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP in 40 appearances. His Statcast percentile rankings are well above average across the board: fastball spin (100th), xERA (92nd), xBA (89th) and barrel percentage (83rd).

The 15-year MLB veteran has 172 career saves, including one in the 2022 World Series as a member of the Phillies. Robertson joins Jorge Soler and Yuli Gurriel as members of the roster with a World Series ring (*09 Yankees). His 40 career postseason appearances rank second among active players, trailing only Kenley Jansen.

In exchange for Robertson, a rental piece with an expiring contract, the Marlins shipped 18-year-old infielder Vargas (No. 18 prospect) and 19-year-old catcher Hern芍ndez (No. 21). Both are playing in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League. Full story ?

July 27: Brewers acquire 1B Carlos Santana from Pirates for SS Jhonny Severino

The Brewers made their first big move of the Trade Deadline Thursday by acquiring Santana, who should slot in as the team's everyday first baseman for the time being. Santana, 37, is slashing .235/.321/.412 with 12 home runs and 53 RBIs in 94 games for the Pirates this season, and is on a one-year contract.

First base has been a bit of a revolving door for the Brewers, as eight different players have manned the position for them this season. Rowdy Tellez opened the season at first base there, but he has only hit .213 in 79 games has been out for most of July with a forearm and finger injury. Owen Miller has taken the lion's share of time at first base since, but will likely slide back into a utility role due to the acquisition of the switch-hitting Santana.

Severino, 18, has hit .264 in 60 games across rookie ball, and was a $1.2 million international signing last summer. Full story ?

July 26: Angels acquire RHPs Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo L車pez from White Sox for LHP Ky Bush and C Edgar Quero

Hours after rumors of the Angels officially being in "buy mode" surfaced, the club made the first big splash of the 2023 Trade Deadline.

Gioltio and L車pez, who were also acquired together by the White Sox as part of the Adam Eaton deal in 2016, will both be free agents at the end of the season. Giolito has returned to form after a rough 2022 season, pitching to a 3.79 ERA with 131 strikeouts in 121 innings. The 29-year-old was clearly considered by most to be one of the more desirable arms available and had been linked to the Astros, D-backs, Dodgers and Reds. Angels starters in particular have struggled to find their groove behind Ohtani -- the rotation's collective 4.62 ERA ranks 10th in the American League. L車pez, who transitioned to a full-time bullpen role last season, has notably struggled with his command in 2023 (4.7 BB/9), but gives the Angels another late-inning option to spell Carlos Est谷vez and Matt Moore.

In return, the White Sox will receive Quero and Bush, respectively ranked the Angels' second and third-best prospects by MLB Pipeline ahead of the deal sending them to Chicago. Quero, a switch-hitting backstop, and Bush, a left-handed starter, have each spent the majority of the 2023 season with Double-A Birmingham. Full story ?

July 26: Dodgers acquire SS Amed Rosario from Guardians for RHP Noah Syndergaard and cash

Rosario, who is in his final year of club control before hitting free agency, slashed .265/.306/.369 in 94 games with the Guardians. He*ll likely slide into the everyday shortstop role with the Dodgers, moving Miguel Rojas into a utility/bench role. With the recently-acquired Kik谷 Hern芍ndez in the mix, the Dodgers will have plenty of potential infield configurations moving forward.

Heading to Cleveland is Syndergaard, who had a 7.16 ERA in 12 starts in his first year with the Dodgers. The 30-year-old Syndergaard has not pitched since June 7 due to a blister on his right index finger. The Dodgers had previously planned for Syndergaard to make his third Minor League rehab start on July 27, which could have been his final test before returning to the Majors. Full story ?

July 26: Marlins acquire RHP Jorge L車pez from Twins for RHP Dylan Floro

The Marlins and Twins made a swap of right-handed relievers in this trade, with the Marlins acquiring L車pez and the Twins receiving Floro in return.

L車pez had come to Minnesota in a Trade Deadline deal with the Orioles last season, and he went 4-3 with a 4.81 ERA and seven saves in 60 appearances for the Twins. He was an All-Star in 2022 with Baltimore, recording 19 saves with a 1.68 ERA before being dealt.

Floro, 32, has gone 3-5 with a 4.54 ERA (39.2 IP, 20 ER), seven saves, 11 walks, 41 strikeouts, a 1.49 WHIP and a 9.3 strikeouts-per-9.0 innings ratio in 43 relief appearances for the Marlins this season. Full story ?

July 26: Mariners acquire RHP Trent Thornton from Blue Jays for SS Mason McCoy

Thornton, who was designated for assignment last week when the Blue Jays acquired G谷nesis Cabrera, has allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings this year. The 29-year-old has a 4.77 ERA in 260 1/3 career innings. He began his career as a starter (he tossed 154 1/3 innings as a rookie in 2019) but has since shifted into the bullpen. He has a 4.17 ERA in 110 career innings as a reliever.

McCoy, a 28-year-old middle infielder, has spent the past three seasons at Triple-A with Baltimore and Seattle, where he's hit .238 with 41 home runs. He has yet to appear in the bigs. Full story ?

July 26: Red Sox acquire RHP Mauricio Llovera from Giants for RHP Marques Johnson

Llovera, 27, allowed one run over 5 1/3 innings before being designated for assignment by San Francisco. The right-hander has recorded a 6.14 ERA in 29 appearances spanning four big league seasons.

July 25: Dodgers acquire SS Kik谷 Hern芍ndez from Red Sox for RHP Nick Robertson and RHP Justin Hagenman

After 2 1/2 years in Boston, Hern芍ndez is heading back to Los Angeles, where he played six seasons and was a key contributor on some stellar Dodgers teams. While Hern芍ndez isn't the player he was during his first stint in Los Angeles (he's hitting .222/.279/.320 with six home runs and 31 RBIs), he can play all over the diamond (he's played at shortstop, second base and centerfield this season) and will likely slot into a bench role. He also boasts a career .811 OPS against right-handed pitchers and has played in 69 postseason games, two things that the Dodgers undoubtedly value.

In return, the Red Sox grabbed two relievers who will likely enter the team's bullpen next season -- if not sooner. Robertson made his MLB debut earlier this season, compiling a 6.10 ERA in 10 1/3 innings. He has a 2.54 ERA in 28 1/3 innings in Triple-A this season. Hagenman has yet to appear in MLB, but has a 2.78 ERA in 55 innings in Triple-A. He went unselected in last year's Rule 5 draft, and will be eligible for Rule 5 again this winter. Full story ?

July 24: Braves acquire RHP Pierce Johnson from Rockies for RHP Victor Vodnik and RHP Tanner Gordon

Johnson has a 6.00 ERA and 1.85 WHIP this season, but he's struck out 30.9% of the batters he's faced and was 13 for 15 in save chances with the Rockies. The Braves were in need of another right-hander in their bullpen with Jesse Chavez (left shin contusion) not close to a return and Nick Anderson going on the 60-day IL due to a right shoulder strain earlier this month.

In exchange for Johnson, a Denver native who signed a one-year contract with the Rockies in the offseason, Colorado got back Atlanta's No. 10 (Vodnik) and No. 26 (Gordon) prospects per MLB Pipeline. Full story ?

July 24: Braves acquire LHP Taylor Hearn from Rangers

In addition to trading for Pierce Johnson, the Braves also picked up Hearn from Texas. The 28-year-old southpaw, who owns a career 5.11 ERA over 229 innings, was designated for assignment last week. Full story ?

July 21: Blue Jays acquire LHP G谷nesis Cabrera from Cardinals for C Samuel Hernandez

Cabrera, who was designated for assignment by St. Louis on July 17, had a 5.06 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 32 innings for the Cardinals. Hernandez, a catcher selected in the 14th round of the '22 Draft, hit .213 with 14 extra-base hits in 42 games in the Florida Complex League and Single-A Dunedin.

July 19: Orioles acquire RHP Shintaro Fujinami from Athletics for LHP Easton Lucas

Fujinami, who signed a one-year, $3.25 million contract with the Athletics in the offseason, has a 8.57 ERA in 49 1/3 innings this season. He began the season as a starting pitcher, but was moved to the bullpen after he went 0-6 with a 14.26 ERA in seven starts. He's fared better in the bullpen (5.40 ERA) and has only allowed two earned runs in July.

Lucas has a 2.93 ERA in 30 2/3 innings across Double-A and Triple-A this season, and was one of three pitchers who threw a combined no-hitter for the Double-A Bowie Baysox earlier this year. Full story ?

July 16: Cubs acquire C/1B P.J. Higgins from D-backs for cash

Higgins returns to the Cubs, with whom he played in 2021-22, hitting .210 with six homers in 83 games. He signed a Minor League deal with the D-backs this past offseason.

July 13: Padres acquire OF Ben Gamel from Rays for cash

Gamel, who has a .253 career batting average across seven Major League seasons, hit .276/.402/.463 with eight home runs in 59 games with Triple-A Durham this season.

July 13: White Sox acquire RHP Mike Mayers from Royals for cash

An eight-year veteran, Mayers had a 6.15 ERA over 26 1/3 innings for the Royals this season. He*d been pitching for Triple-A Omaha since he was outrighted off Kansas City*s 40-man roster in June.

July 12: Dodgers acquire RHP Tyson Miller from Brewers for cash

Miller threw 9 1/3 innings over seven relief appearances for Milwaukee this season and had a 5.79 ERA.

July 7: Giants acquire OF Jack Larsen from Mariners

Larsen, who has one big league plate appearance under his belt, hit .313 with 10 RBIs in 25 games for Triple-A Tacoma this season.

July 6: Guardians acquire RHP Chris Vallimont from Orioles for cash

Vallimont had been with the Orioles organization since the club claimed him off waivers from the Twins in May 2022. The 26-year-old made his MLB debut on July 3, getting two outs in a relief appearance against the Yankees.

July 4: Dodgers acquire SS Pat Valaika from Mariners for cash

Valaika last appeared in the Majors with the Orioles in 2021. He hit .240 with four homers and a .748 OPS for Triple-A Tacoma after signing a Minor League deal with Seattle in the offseason.

July 3: Mets acquire RHP Trevor Gott and RHP Chris Flexen from Mariners for LHP Zach Muckenhirn

In exchange for Gott, who has held right-handed batters to a .517 OPS this season, the Mets took Flexen and the roughly $4 million remaining on his contract, then immediately designated him for assignment to clear 40-man roster space. Full story ?

June 30: Rangers acquire LHP Aroldis Chapman from Royals for LHP Cole Ragans and OF Roni Cabrera

The Rangers struck early to shore up their bullpen, acquiring the 35-year-old Chapman more than a month before the Deadline. Chapman, who signed a one-year, $3.75 million deal with the Royals in the offseason, has rejuvenated his career after posting a 4.46 ERA with a career-worst 10.7 K/9 and 1.54 K/BB ratio with the Yankees last season. With his velocity ticking back up, Chapman recorded a 2.45 ERA with a 16.3 K/9 and 2.65 K/BB ratio in 31 games for Kansas City. He joins a Rangers 'pen that entered Friday with the eighth-highest ERA (4.31) in MLB.

In exchange for Chapman, the Royals got back Ragans, the 30th overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft, as well as Cabrera, a 17-year-old outfielder currently playing in the Dominican Summer League. Full story ?
