Veteran Chavez, top prospect Walcott among Rangers' NRIs
ARLINGTON -- When Jesse Chavez made his MLB debut with the Pirates in 2008, Sebastian Walcott was just 2 years old.
Now the 41-year-old Chavez and 18-year-old Walcott will share a clubhouse in Surprise, Ariz., this spring. On Monday, the Rangers announced they signed Chavez to a Minor League deal with an invitation to big league Spring Training with a chance to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster.
Walcott -- the Rangers¡¯ No. 1 prospect, per MLB Pipeline -- is invited to his first big league Spring Training as a non-roster invitee. He¡¯s the No. 17 prospect in baseball, per Pipeline.
Chavez will be returning for his fourth stint with the Rangers organization. He was originally selected by the club in the 42nd round of the 2002 MLB Draft out of Riverside (Calif.) City College. He posted a 4.58 ERA in 96 games (nine starts) with Texas from 2018-20.
Last season, Chavez had a 3.13 ERA in 46 relief appearances for the Atlanta Braves. He currently ranks seventh among all active pitchers in career relief innings (695 2/3) and 13th in relief appearances (568).
Walcott is the No. 4-ranked shortstop prospect in baseball. Though he struggled early in 2024, he finished the year with a .265/.344/.452 slash line between High-A Hickory (116 games) and Double-A Frisco (five games). He¡¯ll likely start '24 back in Frisco as he continues to move quickly through the Rangers¡¯ system.
Additionally, the Rangers signed right-handed pitchers David Buchanan, outfielder Cody Thomas and catcher Chad Wallach to Minor League deals with invitations to big league camp.
