Vice President/Assistant General Manager, Professional, Amateur, and Pacific Rim Scouting
Josh Boyd serves as the Rangers¡¯ Vice President/Assistant General Manager after being promoted in September 2021. In his 18th year with the organization, he had been Assistant General Manager since November 2016.
Josh continues to oversee player personnel in the amateur, professional and Pacific Rim scouting departments. He advises Chris Young on player acquisition and roster construction and is instrumental in hiring for key roles throughout Rangers Baseball Operations.
As Assistant General Manager from 2017-21, Josh was responsible for overseeing all aspects of pro player evaluation including Pacific Rim scouting operations and the R&D department. Josh led the scouting staff responsible for signing Colby Lewis and Yu Darvish out of the Japanese Nippon Professional Baseball League. In 2018, he worked with former Padres and Tigers GM Randy Smith to spearhead the Rangers six-year partnership with the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters through 2023, and more recently established a working relationship with the Toyota Red Cruisers of Japan¡¯s industrial league.
Prior to his current role, Josh spent two years as Senior Director of Player Personnel after serving as Director of Pro Scouting from 2009-14. He joined the Rangers in 2008 as Assistant Director of Pro Scouting.
Before his time with the Rangers, he covered four drafts as an area scout for the San Diego Padres. In 2004, he covered the Mid-Atlantic region for the Padres and then spent three years covering the Northwest territory while based in Puyallup, Wash.
Between 2001-2004, he lived in Durham, NC covering minor league prospects and the draft as a national writer for Baseball America. Additionally, he covered baseball for the Orange Coast College school paper prior to landing his first professional writing opportunities for STATS, Inc in 1996 and MLB.com in 1999. In 2000, he interned for STATS, Inc during FOX NFL Sunday broadcasts in Los Angeles, while other freelance assignments included writing the text on the back of Bowman baseball cards in 2001-2002.
Boyd, 53, was raised in Vancouver, Wash., and Irvine, Calif. He and his wife Michelle reside in Keller, TX with their son, Jackson (18) and daughter, Ellie (16).
