Earlier this year, Major League Baseball, its Clubs and the Jackie Robinson Foundation commemorated the annual Jackie Robinson Day on Wednesday, April 15, in a celebration of the life of the Hall of Famer whose legacy and impact extended far beyond baseball and is still felt today. For that April 15 celebration, due to the shutdown of baseball at the time, all Jackie Robinson Day activities ¨C ranging from fun to educational to musical - were virtual, and links to those activities are below, under ˇ°Jackie Kids Content.ˇ±
Since we are now playing games again, August 28 has been designated ˇ°Jackie Robinson Dayˇ± so our game can celebrate his legacy in-stadium in a manner similar to past years: with the players, coaches and managers wearing jerseys, caps and socks with RobinsonˇŻs No. 42, along with base jewels, lineup cards and more. The date of August 28 was chosen as a suitable ˇ°make-upˇ± date for two significant reasons: it is the anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, which Robinson actually attended, as well as the date in 1945 when Branch Rickey met with Robinson to discuss his future in MLB.
