LATEST INJURIES
OF Joey Loperfido
Injury: Neck discomfort
Expected return: Day to day
Status: Loperfido slammed into the wall awkwardly Tuesday in Dunedin and left the game with trainers. (updated Feb. 25)
CF Daulton Varsho
Injury: Right rotator cuff surgery
Expected return: Early 2025; Opening Day in question
Status: Varsho has been facing live pitching and taking BP at max effort, but throwing will be the final challenge. He's expected to get into game action soon as a DH, with Friday a possibility, per manager John Schneider. (updated Feb. 25)
3B/OF Addison Barger
Injury: Right hand contusion
Expected return: TBD
Status: Barger exited Sunday's game against the Red Sox in Fort Myers, Fla., after taking a Garrett Crochet pitch off his right hand. He still had some swelling and a blood blister Feb. 24, but X-rays were negative and he should be back in game action soon. (updated Feb. 24)
RHP Ryan Burr
Injury: Right shoulder tendinitis
Expected return: In time for Opening Day
Status: Burr felt the tendinitis recently and backed off throwing for a couple of days, but he played catch on Feb. 22 and should have plenty of time to ramp back up if all goes well. (updated Feb. 22)
RHP Erik Swanson
Injury: Right forearm fatigue
Expected return: In time for Opening Day
Status: Swanson was "a little behind" to start camp, but has been throwing on flat ground. On Feb. 18, Swanson threw 10 pitches off a mound and felt good, so everything is moving in the right direction for him to be ready for Opening Day. (updated Feb. 19)
RHP Alek Manoah
Injury: Right UCL surgery
Expected return: Midseason 2025
Status: Manoah's recovery has been steady and all news has been positive, so the big right-hander is positioning himself for a comeback story in the second half of the season, similar to what Hyun Jin Ryu did down the stretch in 2023. (updated Feb. 13)
LHP Ricky Tiedemann
Injury: Tommy John surgery (left elbow)
Expected return: Potentially late 2025
Status: Tiedemann has physical gifts few prospects do, but he has battled injuries, and this recovery is his biggest challenge yet. If he gets back into game action by the end of the 2025 season, that's a success. (updated Feb. 13)
