Halos ink veteran infielder Duffy to one-year deal
TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Angels bolstered their infield depth on Wednesday, signing veteran Matt Duffy to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million. Right-hander Griffin Canning (lower back strain) was placed on the 60-day injured list to make room for Duffy.
Duffy, 31, batted .287/.357/.381 with five homers, 12 doubles and 30 RBIs in 97 games with the Cubs last season. He has plenty of versatility, as he played 56 games at third, 21 games at second base, five at shortstop, three in left field and two at first base.
It¡¯s unclear whether Duffy will be used in a utility role or if the Angels view him as a starting second baseman with David Fletcher moving from second to short.
Duffy, a Long Beach, Calif. native, is a career .283/.341/.380 hitter with 86 doubles, nine triples, 27 home runs, 199 RBIs and 40 stolen bases in 549 games with the Giants (2014-16), Rays (2016, 2018-19) and Cubs (2021). He won the World Series with San Francisco in 2014.
