Vincent (pectoral strain) to injured list

MIAMI -- The Giants placed right-hander Nick Vincent, who exited during the sixth inning of Tuesday's 11-3 loss to the Marlins with a right pectoral strain, on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday. In a corresponding roster move, San Francisco recalled lefty Williams Jerez from Triple-A Sacramento.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy estimated that Vincent could be sidelined for 2-3 weeks.

"Sometimes these things take a little bit longer, but that's my guess," Bochy said. "I'd give him at least 10 days and see where we're at and then we'll reevaluate him then."

Vincent showed discomfort following the second pitch to Curtis Granderson -- an 88.4-mph four-seam fastball -- with a runner at first and no outs in Tuesday's game. After trying to stretch out his right shoulder and touching near his collarbone, Vincent looked inside the dugout before head athletic trainer Anthony Reyes and Bochy went to check on him.

"I've never felt this. That's why as soon as I did I was like, 'This is weird,'" Vincent said on Tuesday.

Vincent, who surrendered a two-out, three-run homer to Jorge Alfaro in relief of Jeff Samardzija in the fifth, didn't throw a warmup pitch before exiting. Left-hander Derek Holland took over and walked Granderson before giving up a three-run homer to Garrett Cooper.

The 32-year-old Vincent, signed by the Giants in early March, has a 5.58 ERA in 30 2/3 innings spanning 18 appearances. He joins Travis Bergen (left shoulder strain) and Trevor Gott (right forearm strain) as Giants relievers who landed on the IL over the past week.

Gott threw 15 pitches off the mound for the first time on Wednesday, and Bergen will do the same on Thursday in Arizona.

Beede gets nod on Thursday
Right-hander Tyler Beede will start Thursday's 10:10 a.m. PT finale at Marlins Park, after the Giants elected to push southpaw Drew Pomeranz to Friday in Baltimore.

Beede struggled at the big league level in his first stint this season, giving up 10 earned runs over 6 2/3 innings in three games (one start). It was another story at Triple-A, where the 26-year-old has gone 2-2 with a 2.34 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in seven starts.

"Doing the same thing as he does up here," Bochy said of the key to Beede transferring his Minor League success to the Majors. "Getting that sense of comfort and sense of belonging, sometimes it takes a while to get that. Some guys longer than others. Equipment's there, but it's just a matter of executing up here the same way you do down there."

The Giants decided to go with Beede rather than right-hander Dereck Rodriguez, who pitched two scoreless relief innings against the D-backs upon his callup on Saturday.

"I think Dereck can help us out of the 'pen," Bochy said. "He did a nice job in San Francisco, and so he's a guy who's going to help up in long relief and maybe even short. We felt like this was the best way to go."

Quite the connection
A familiar face stopped by to catch up with Samardzija following Wednesday's batting practice: former Notre Dame and NFL quarterback Brady Quinn.

Samardzija and Quinn were collegiate teammates from 2003-06 in South Bend, connecting for 27 touchdowns. Though Quinn got to watch Samardzija on the mound in college and as a member of the Cubs from '08-14, it has been tougher since Quinn moved to Florida a decade ago and San Francisco's right-hander ended up on the West Coast.

"It's cool to see him out there in a different element," Quinn said. "I remember back in college seeing him like that. It was weird seeing him as a football player and what you saw on the field, and then when he was pitching and playing. It's been fun to follow his career, and obviously everyone's proud and happy for him with everything he's doing. Still playing and doing great."
