2006
An injured shoulder severely limited Colon in 2006. He finished 1-5 with a 5.11 ERA in 10 starts. He began the year with two losses and a 7.07 ERA in three starts before being put on the disabled list with an inflamed right shoulder, a problem stemming back to leaving Game 5 of the 2005 ALDS against the Yankees after one inning. He allowed three earned runs or fewer in only four of his 10 starts. Colon's only victory came when he tossed a shutout against the Mariners on July 5, striking out two and giving up four hits. His final start of the year came against the Devil Rays on July 26, when he left with a sore right elbow after allowing four runs in one inning. Colon's season ended on Aug. 4, when it was determined that the 2005 AL Cy Young Award winner had a partial thickness tear in his right rotator cuff. Colon didn't have surgery, and he began an aggressive rehab program at the Angels' Spring Training complex in Tempe, with plans to be able to start throwing in January 2007. It is unknown whether he will be able to pitch immediately when next season opens. He started for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic and posted a 1-0 record and a 0.64 ERA in three starts.
