Voit to be re-evaluated for abdomen tightness
First baseman likely to sit on Sunday, but could be available from bench
LONDON -- Luke Voit spent a lot of time on the basepaths in the beginning of the London Series -- perhaps a bit too much.
Voit was removed from Saturday's 17-13 victory over the Red Sox with tightness in his lower left abdomen. The slugging first baseman said that no tests are scheduled, but he will be re-evaluated by the Yankees' medical staff on Sunday morning and he hopes to avoid having to go on the injured list.
"Man, I hope not, but I can't tell the future," Voit said.
A hopeful to be named as a reserve on the American League All-Star team, Voit was replaced by pinch-runner Gio Urshela after legging out a fifth-inning double, his fourth hit of the game.
"I kind of felt it going around first," Voit said. "It was weird. It kind of freaked me out right when it happened, and I guess there was really no point in me staying in the game. I think that was the right decision."
Manager Aaron Boone said that Voit is unlikely to start on Sunday, when the Yankees conclude their visit to London, but it is possible that Voit could be available off the bench.
"I feel like the evaluation of him was pretty good, considering what I saw," Boone said. "Even when I went out there, he said, ¡®Actually, I think I¡¯m OK.¡¯ But from the looks of it, I felt like at that point in the game we needed to get him out of there. His physical exams after the game were all good, so we¡¯ll re-evaluate where he¡¯s at [Sunday].
Compiling his second career four-hit game -- his first was also against Boston, on Sept. 19, 2018 -- Voit doubled home a run and scored in the first inning, singled in the second inning, doubled and scored in the fourth and knocked another two-base hit in the fifth.
Voit said that he does not believe the field conditions at London Stadium were a factor in his injury.
"The dirt is soft; it reminds me of a high school or college football field, but I don't think that's why," Voit said. "It's weird; it's not like a hammy or a quad or something that you can pull. Maybe I did, but I don't know how to explain it. It's really weird for me."
