More work for Mr. Splash: O's expanding 'Bird Bath' in '25
BALTIMORE -- When the Orioles announced the modifications to the Camden Yards left-field wall coming for the 2025 season, they took the location of Mr. Splash -- the team¡¯s chief hydration officer responsible for using a hose to spray the fans in the ¡°Bird Bath¡± splash zone -- into consideration.
The man who kept the fans in Section 86 wet the past two years wasn¡¯t being hung out to dry.
¡°There is now a flat platform for Mr. Splash to do his thing,¡± general manager Mike Elias said.
That¡¯s a good thing, because Mr. Splash will now have a lot more people to spray in 2025.
The Orioles announced on Wednesday that the ¡°Bird Bath¡± splash zone is expanding for the upcoming season. It will now be held in both Sections 84 and 86, increasing the number of fans who will be targeted by Mr. Splash¡¯s hose.
Fans who buy tickets for either of those sections will be part of the splash zone. Single-game tickets for the 2025 season will be going on sale to the general public on Jan. 16 at 10 a.m. ET. Tickets will be available at Orioles.com/tickets.
The ¡°Bird Bath¡± debuted on May 12, 2023, and it was an idea that came directly from players in the O¡¯s clubhouse. The team has used water-themed celebrations over the past two seasons -- players doing ¡°the sprinkler¡± after extra-base hits, pitchers spitting water onto the field from the dugout, home run hitters drinking out of the hydration station -- and they wanted to get fans involved, too.
Mr. Splash¡¯s role is to spray the fans after all extra-base hits. He kept busy during his first game, when Cedric Mullins became the seventh player in Orioles history to hit for the cycle.
¡°It seemed like they enjoyed it out there. There's no doubt about it,¡± manager Brandon Hyde said of the fans that night. ¡°Anything that brings excitement and energy to the ballpark, I think it's great."
Since the introduction of the ¡°Bird Bath,¡± Mr. Splash has been joined by various guest splashers. Former Orioles players Cal Ripken Jr., Adam Jones and Ben McDonald have all taken a turn, as well as Maryland Governor Wes Moore, O¡¯s owner David Rubenstein and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Joan Jett.
Anybody who joins Mr. Splash in the future better be ready to cover a larger area with the hose.
