Padres scratch Paddack from Sunday start
TORONTO -- Chris Paddack was scratched from his start in the series finale in Toronto with a stiff neck, the Padres announced Sunday morning.
¡°It¡¯s nothing serious in our minds whatsoever,¡± manager Andy Green said prior to the game. ¡°He woke up today and felt like he could pitch. We know, through the course of 162, he¡¯s not pitching every five days, so we chose to push him back for three days.¡±
Paddack will now make his next start on Wednesday against the Yankees.
Left-hander Robbie Erlin got the start in Paddack¡¯s place, as the Padres look to complete a three-game sweep over the Blue Jays. Erlin has a 3.63 ERA over 22 relief appearances this season -- with workload peaks of three innings and 50 pitches, which he did back on April 9 against the Giants.
Paddack has been one of baseball¡¯s best starters this season. The rookie right-hander owns a 1.93 ERA over his first nine MLB starts, with 56 strikeouts in 51 1/3 innings.
Quantrill optioned after earning first MLB win
The Padres optioned right-hander Cal Quantrill to Triple-A El Paso prior to Sunday¡¯s series finale in Toronto.
Quantrill recorded his first career win in the Padres' 19-4 rout of the Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon. The 24-year-old native of Port Hope, Ontario, pitched six innings of three-run ball, allowing just two hits -- both home runs -- and compiling nine strikeouts in front of a crowded cheering section. Quantrill¡¯s father, Paul, pitched six seasons for the Blue Jays.
¡°We also expect to see Cal back in short order again, this is just baseball for the Padres in 2019,¡± Green said. ¡°We have a lot of starters we¡¯re going to use. We¡¯re going to give guys extra rest. We¡¯re going to do everything we can to make sure these guys are healthy for the long haul.¡±
After Saturday¡¯s start, Green spoke highly of Quantrill, the club¡¯s No. 10 prospect.
¡°It was definitely [Cal's] best day in the big leagues so far,¡± Green said. ¡°His stuff¡¯s good, good enough to pitch here. We have a lot of confidence, as time moves on, that he¡¯s going to be a big part of what we do. He¡¯s going to pitch in big games for us."
In a corresponding move, the Padres recalled right-handed reliever Luis Perdomo from El Paso. This will be Perdomo¡¯s second stint with the Padres this season, after he posted a 3.86 ERA over five relief appearances before he was optioned to the Chihuahuas on May 3.
