Home Base Program
Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Program, is dedicated to healing the invisible wounds for Veterans of all eras, Service Members, Military Families and Families of the Fallen through world-class clinical care, wellness, education and research.
The ideation and creation was led by Red Sox & Red Sox Foundation Chairman Tom Werner after Red Sox Ownership, management players and others visited Walter Reed Army Medical Center following the historic World Series wins in 2004 and 2007.
The Home Base Program is the first partnership of its kind in the nation between an academic medical center and a Major League Baseball team. As a National Center of Excellence, Home Base operates the largest private-sector clinic in the nation devoted to healing invisible wounds such as post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Since its inception, Home Base has served more than 35,000 veterans and family members with care and support, provided over 85,000 on-line and in-person training sessions to clinicians, educators, first responders and community members nationally, and remains at the forefront of discovering new treatments. In September, 2018, Home Base officially opened the doors to its new, state-of-the-art facility in the Charlestown Navy Yard. The center has doubled Home Base¡¯s capacity, providing the space and resources needed to significantly enhance the mental health care and support services provided to service members, Veterans, and their families.
The Red Sox Foundation to date has committed over $41 million to the program, with the majority raised through its annual Run to Home Base. In 2019, the Red Sox and Red Sox Foundation received the prestigious Allan H. Selig Award for Philanthropic Excellence in recognition of the club¡¯s role and Foundation¡¯s efforts in the creation of Home Base. In April 2021, Tom Werner received the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service ¨C the second-highest award presented by the Secretary of Defense. This is the second time that Werner has received recognition from the armed forces for his leadership in creating Home Base. In 2014, he was awarded the Army¡¯s Outstanding Civilian Service Medal, one of the highest honors bestowed upon civilians by the United States Army.
