D-backs top prospect needs surgery (source)
Corbin Carroll, the D-backs' No. 1 prospect per MLB Pipeline, will have season-ending shoulder surgery, a source told MLB Pipeline's William Boor. The club has not confirmed.
The 20-year-old center fielder was off to a tremendous start with High-A Hillsboro, hitting .435 with a double, two triples, two home runs and three steals over his first seven games.?
Carroll, who is ranked as the No. 38 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline, has the potential to become one of baseball's very best prospects given his plus-plus speed and emerging power at the plate. He's already shown an advanced hit tool for his age, controlling the strike zone well and impressing at Arizona's alternate training site in 2020 after the Minor League season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has shown great range defensively in center field as well.
The D-backs drafted Carroll 16th overall in 2019, and he has advanced rapidly through the organization's farm system. If he is fully healthy to begin next season, his continued rise could help him reach the Majors faster than the typical player drafted out of high school.
