Married to Ella...has two daughters: Katherine and Emma...Played at Virginia Tech, where he went 20-16 with a 4.00 ERA and 227 strikeouts in 64 games (47 starts) over four seasons from 2010-13...Grew up approximately 100 miles southeast of campus and was a lifelong Hokie fan prior to committing...Selected in the MLB draft on three separate occasions: 48th round in 2009 (Mets), 28th round in 2012 (Phillies) and the 27th round in 2013 (Tigers)…Is a part-time rancher at Ginger Hill Angus in Washington, Va....his wife, Ella, is the daughter of a farmer...His in-laws have bred Angus cattle since 1962 and bred more than 130 bulls last year for sale to cattle breeders across the country.

2023

In his fourth season with the D-backs, went 2-2 with a 4.62 ERA (20 ER in 39.0 IP), 1.13 WHIP and .236 opponent average over 35 games (three starts)...Began the season on the 15-day injured list (left shoulder inflammation) … made his season debut on April 18 in St. Louis. In 32 relief appearances, went 2-1 with a 4.75 ERA (19 ER in 36.0 IP), 1.14 WHIP and .235 opponent average...Made his first Major League start on Aug. 15 in Colorado (zero ER in 1.0 IP). In three starts, went 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA (one ER in 3.0 IP) and 1.00 WHIP...Posted a career-best .236 opponent average...Held lefties to a .185 average (12-for-65) and .209 OBP with 15 strikeouts, no homers and just two walks...Opponents hit .167 (6-for-36) off his curve and .178 (8-for-45) off his changeup, with both over a 30.0 whiff percentage...allowed only three extra-base hits (no homers) off both pitches...Retired 18 of his 22 inherited runners over 32 games with a .235 opponent average and 28 strikeouts. Appeared in a career-high 69 games in his third season with the D-backs, going 2-5 with 2 saves, a 2.85 ERA (19 ER in 60.0 IP), six walks, 61 strikeouts and a 1.08 WHIP...Posted career bests in wins, saves, ERA, walks, strikeouts and WHIP…tied his career-low .250 opponent avg. (also: 2019)....Ranked among NL relievers [min. 60 G] in BB/9.0 IP (1st, 0.90), walks (1st), K/ BB (1st, 10.17), games (T-3rd) and WHIP (7th). ...Had a career-best 17-game scoreless streak from May 7-June 21 (16.1 IP)....Did not allow a hit in a career-best six straight games from Aug. 1-11 (6.2 IP)....On Nov. 13, 2022, Joe Mantiply was inducted into the Pittsylvania County (Va.) Sports Hall of Fame...Two days later, on Nov. 15, the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors honored him with a resolution and a proclamation that July 19 is officially “Joe Mantiply Day”.

2021

Made 57 appearances in his first season with the D-backs, going 0-3 with a 3.40 ERA (15 ER in 39.2 IP)…also pitched in five games with Triple-A Reno... Tied for fourth among NL rookies in appearances (also: Phil Bickford/LADMIL)…his 11 holds tied for ninth among Major League rookies... 32 of his 57 outings were fewer than 1.0 inning ( recorded 1 out 21 times)... Ranked third in the Majors with 50 inherited runners (10 scored; 20.0 pct.)...Boasted a 14-game scoreless streak (8.1 IP) from Aug. 30-Sept. 28.

2020

Spent the majority of the season at the D-backs' Alternate Training Site...Played in four games with Arizona and posted a 15.43 ERA (4 ER in 2.1 IP)…Was designated for assignment on Sept. 28.

2019

Pitched in 1 game for the Yankees on Aug. 12 vs. Orioles (W, 3 ER in 3.0 IP)... Combined to go 1-0 with 1 save, a 4.31 ERA (19 ER in 39.2 IP) and 1.16 WHIP in 25 appearances between Double-A Chattanooga (Reds), Triple-A Louisville (Reds) and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Yankees)... Acquired by the Yankees from the Reds on Aug. 8 for cash considerations.

2017

Spent the season with the Yankees' Class AAA affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre...posted a 0.95 ERA in his 6 starts (19ip, 16h, 5bb, 17k, 0hr)...posted a 3.53 ERA with 1 save in 2 opps in his 29 relief apps (51ip, 56h, 13bb, 45k, 3hr)...following the season became a minor league free agent and on 11/13 was signed by the Reds to a minor league contract with an invitation to 2018 Major League spring training camp.

2016

Saw his first Major League action with Detroit, posting a 16.88 ERA (2.2IP, 5ER) in five relief appearances…was signed to a Major League contract and selected to the Tigers' active roster on 9/3…made his Major League debut that night at Kansas City, retiring his only batter faced (Jarrod Dyson) on two pitches (0.1IP)…recorded his first Major League strikeout (Pedro Alvarez, swinging) on 9/10 vs. Baltimore…began the season with Double-A Erie, going 3-1 with one save and a 2.47 ERA (51.0IP, 14ER, 62K) in 49 relief outings…also saw time with Triple-A Toledo, going 1-1 with a 4.32 ERA (8.1IP, 4ER, 7K) in seven relief appearances…
