BOSTON -- The White Sox placed left-handed pitcher Mart¨ªn P¨¦rez on the 15-day injured list on Saturday with left elbow inflammation and recalled left-hander Jared Shuster from Triple-A Charlotte.
The 34-year-old P¨¦rez left Friday night¡¯s game at Boston after tossing 52 pitches over three innings in the opener of a 10-day, 10-game, three-city, three-time zone road trip for the White Sox. He had an MRI done Saturday, but the results were not known at game time.
¡°We were at the point where we knew that it was at least going to be an IL,¡± White Sox manager Will Venable said. ¡°We knew it was bad enough that we needed to get some help here.¡±
¡°I feel sore. The weather, I¡¯m not 20, your body changes,¡± said P¨¦rez after his abbreviated start. ¡°But [Friday] I was too tight I feel with my cutter and my changeup. I was just trying to be smart and tell them to get me out of the game and see what I got.¡±
With P¨¦rez¡¯s next start slated for Wednesday, the White Sox have TBA listed for their pitcher that night in Minnesota. Bryse Wilson, Mike Vasil, Tyler Gilbert and Shuster have all worked in relief in 2025, but have the stretched-out capabilities to give the team starter innings.
¡°We can figure it out. And what happens today might impact it,¡± Venable said. ¡°We just have to take today, evaluate where we're at and then you obviously build a plan. If somebody who we want to use on Mart¨ªn¡¯s day is available to pitch this week, we have to be thoughtful of that and what it means for the future.¡±
Shuster, 26, is 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA, one hold and 15 strikeouts over six relief appearances and 11 1/3 innings with Charlotte this season. P¨¦rez is 1-1 with a 3.15 ERA, .197 opponents' batting average and 18 strikeouts over four starts this season, his first with the White Sox after signing as a free agent on Jan. 21. He has been as valuable off the field and in the clubhouse as he has been on the mound.
