1998

January 10: Single-game tickets go on sale for Opening Day on March 31 against the Colorado Rockies. All tickets are gone before lunch.

February 13: Pitchers and catchers take the field @ Kino Veterans Memorial Sportspark in Tucson to inaugurate the D-backs' first Major League Spring Training.

February 27: In the D-backs' first Cactus League exhibition game, Edwin Diaz hits a ninth-inning sacrifice fly that scores Kelly Stinnett with the winning run in a 6-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox @ Tucson Electric Park.

March 20: Jerry Colangelo and county officials break bottles of sparkling water over the rotunda railings to highlight the official dedication ceremony @ Bank One Ballpark.

March 29: The final exhibition game of the season serves as a trial run for Bank One Ballpark as 49,198 fans see the White Sox defeat Arizona, 3-0.

March 31: With 50,179 fans overflowing Bank One Ballpark, the D-backs celebrate the first regular season game in franchise history. Colorado wins, 9-2, but not before Travis Lee collects Arizona's first hit (a first-inning single), first homer, first run and first RBI.

April 5: Arizona celebrates its first victory, a 3-2 win over San Francisco.

July 30: Omar Daal pitches the franchise's first complete-game shutout, scattering four hits in a 4-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs @ Bank One Ballpark.

September 4: A 3-1 win over Houston gives the D-backs their seventh consecutive victory, equaling the longest winning streak by any expansion team in history.

September 13: Andy Benes comes within two outs of pitching a no-hitter in a 5-0 win @ Cincinnati, highlighting a September in which he was 3-0 with an 0.47 ERA. Benes ends the season with a string of 27.1 scoreless innings.

1999

February 26: Tony Womack arrives from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Minor League outfielder Paul Weichard and a player to be named later (pitcher Jason Boyd).

April 11: Luis Gonzalez cracks a seventh-inning homer off Atlanta's Greg Maddux, beginning a hitting streak that will last through May 18. Gonzalez is the 37th player in major-league history to reach the 30-game plateau.

April 19: Jay Bell is named National League Player-of-the-Week, becoming the first D-back ever to win the award. Before the season ends, he will be joined by Matt Williams (twice), Randy Johnson (twice) and Steve Finley. Williams was also NL Player-of-the-Month for April and Johnson was Pitcher-of-the-Month for July.

May 12: Matt Williams¡¯ two-run, game-winning homer caps a five-run ninth as Arizona comes from behind for an 8-6 win over Montreal. It is the third straight night that the D-backs beat the Expos with a homer in their final at-bat. Jay Bell was the hero on May 10, with Luis Gonzalez doing the honors on May 11.

June 25: Bank One Ballpark plays host to its first no-hitter as St. Louis' Jose Jimenez outduels the D-backs' Randy Johnson, 1-0. The game's only run scores on Thomas Howard's single in the top of the ninth inning.

July 9: Arizona's bullpen is solidified with the addition of closer Matt Mantei, acquired from Florida for pitcher Vladimir N¨²?ez, pitcher Brad Penny and a player to be named later.

July 11: Jay Bell's grand slam in the sixth inning wins $1 million for fan Gylene Hoyle of Chandler, who predicted the player and the inning before the game as part of Shamrock Farms Grand Slam Sundae. As an afterthought, the D-backs beat Oakland, 7-4.

July 13: Third baseman Matt Williams and second baseman Jay Bell become the first D-backs to start an All-Star Game. Pitcher Randy Johnson and left fielder Luis Gonzalez also make appearances. No team could boast more representatives.

July 21: Tony Womack legs out a ninth inning, inside-the-park grand slam off relief ace Billy Wagner to give the D-backs a 7-4 victory in Houston. It is the first inside-the-park homer in franchise history.

September 24: Matt Williams scoops up Doug Mirabelli's ground ball and throws to first base for the final out of an 11-3 victory @ San Francisco that mathematically clinches the National League West championship for the D-backs. Arizona becomes the first expansion team to reach the playoffs or win a division title in its second year of competition.

September 26: An estimated 8,000 fans jam the Bank One Ballpark Plaza to greet the D-backs on their return home from their sweep of the Giants.

October 3: The D-backs notch win No. 100 of the year in the season finale. Bernard Gilkey and Rod Barajas hit back-to-back home runs in a 10-3 win over San Diego @ Bank One Ballpark.

October 5: In the team's first post-season appearance, Arizona drops an 8-4 decision to the New York Mets. Edgardo Alfonzo's ninth-inning grand slam, his second homer of the day, makes the difference.

October 6: Todd Stottlemyre scatters four hits over 6.2 innings to help the D-backs notch their first post-season win, 7-1; Steve Finley's two-run single in the third puts Arizona ahead to stay.

October 9: Arizona's season ends when Todd Pratt homers in the bottom of the 10th inning to give New York a 4-3 victory in Game Four of the NL Division Series.

November 11: The D-backs earn their first Gold Glove Award when Steve Finley is honored as one of the National League's top fielding outfielders.

November 16: After leading the Major Leagues in strikeouts, innings pitched and complete games, Randy Johnson gives the Arizona franchise its first major individual trophy by winning his second Cy Young Award.

2000

April 30: Randy Johnson compiles what might have been the best first month in baseball history, going 6-0 with a 0.91 ERA, three complete games and a pair of shutouts.

May 2: Tony Womack begins a 24-game hitting streak which would wind up being tied for the longest in the NL in 2000 (Tony Eusebio).

May 13: D-backs set a club record by winning nine consecutive games.

May 31: D-backs turn the first triple play in club history in the fifth inning of their game against the St. Louis Cardinals with Mark McGwire at the plate.

June 26: After hitting 35 home runs in 53 Minor League games, Alex Cabrera makes his big-league debut and homers as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning. He becomes the 78th player in baseball history to homer in his first career at-bat.

July 5: Luis Gonzalez becomes the first D-backs player to hit for the cycle when he homers in the ninth inning @ Houston.

July 11: Randy Johnson starts for the National League in the All-Star Game in Atlanta, giving up 1 hit and striking out 1 in 1.0 inning of work. Steve Finley enters the game as a defensive replacement and singles home a run in his lone at-bat.

September 10: Randy Johnson records the 3,000th strikeout of his career @ Miami.

2001

April 26: Luis Gonzalez hits home runs No. 12 and 13, tying Ken Griffey Jr. for the most homers in Major League history for the month of April.

May 8: Randy Johnson ties the Major League record for strikeouts in nine innings when he fans 20 Cincinnati Reds @ Bank One Ballpark. Johnson leaves after nine innings with the score tied 3-3 and the D-backs win in 11 innings, 4-3.

May 19: D-backs outlast the Giants, 1-0, in an 18-inning marathon @ Pacific Bell Park.

June 30: Luis Gonzalez earns his second National League Player of the Month Award for batting .417 with 12 home runs and 35 RBIs. He also won the award in April.

July 10: Randy Johnson is the National League's starting pitcher at the All-Star Game in Seattle. It is the Big Unit's second straight starting assignment and his eighth trip to the Midsummer Classic.

July 25: For the third straight year, the D-backs make a deal before the trading deadline, acquiring starting pitcher and Mesa, Ariz. Native, Albie Lopez, from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

August 23: Randy Johnson becomes the first pitcher in Major League history to record four consecutive 300-plus strikeout seasons.

September 5: Curt Schilling becomes the D-backs' first-ever 20-game winner.

September 27: Randy Johnson ties the Major League record for double-digit strikeout games in a season as he records his 23rd of the campaign.

October 5: The D-backs beat the Brewers, 5-0, to clinch at least a tie for the NL West crown. The Giants fall to the Dodgers later that night, giving the D-backs their second division title in three years.

October 14: The D-backs defeat the Cardinals in Game 5 of the National League Division Series to advance to the NLCS.

October 21: The D-backs defeat the Braves in Game 5 of the NLCS for their first NL pennant and trip to the World Series.

October 28: Randy Johnson hurls a three-hit complete game, striking out 11 Yankees as the D-backs win Game 2, 4-0, and take a 2-0 lead in games heading to New York.

November 3: After three dramatic losses in New York, the D-backs return home and beat the Yankees, 15-2, to set up a decisive Game 7.

November 4: Luis Gonzalez's soft single to left field scores Jay Bell and caps a two-run ninth-inning comeback as the D-backs beat the Yankees, 3-2, to become the quickest expansion team ever to win a World Series.

November 13: Randy Johnson wins his third straight Cy Young Award, and fourth overall. Teammate Curt Schilling finishes second in the voting.

2002

April 2: The D-backs are awarded their 2001 World Series rings in a pregame ceremony.

April 7: Curt Schilling tosses a one-hitter and strikes out 17 Brewers in Milwaukee.

April 26: Randy Johnson wins his sixth straight start and becomes the first pitcher ever to win six games prior to May 1 in two different seasons (1999). He would be named Pitcher of the Month for April.

May 29: Schilling beats the Giants to move his season record to 10-1. He would be named Pitcher of the Month for May a few days later.

June 8: Schilling extends his club-record winning streak to nine as he outduels Pedro Martinez, 3-2, @ Fenway Park.

June 12: Pitching in Yankee Stadium for the first time since blowing two saves in the 2001 World Series, Byung-Hyun Kim finishes up a 9-5 D-backs win and fires the game ball over the left field wall.

July 9: D-backs manager Bob Brenly leads the National League in the All-Star Game @ Milwaukee's Miller Park. Schilling started for the NL, while Damian Miller, Junior Spivey, Luis Gonzalez, Kim and Johnson also were selected.

July 27: Schilling holds the Padres to one run in eight innings to complete July a perfect 5-0 with a 1.64 ERA good enough for Pitcher of the Month honors.

August 10: Johnson strikes out 14 Marlins to move past Tom Seaver and into fifth place on the all-time strikeout list.

August 16: Schilling strikes out 12 Cubs @ Wrigley Field to earn his 20th win.

September 2: The D-backs suffer their worst defeat ever, 19-1, to the Dodgers. There is some levity to the moment as Mark Grace winds up pitching the ninth for Arizona.

September 4: Johnson tosses a three-hitter and moves past Bert Blyleven and into fourth place on the all-time strikeout list. It's also Johnson's 20th win, making he and Schilling only the sixth pair of teammates since 1950 to win 20 games in back-to-back seasons.

September 9: Johnson sets an MLB record with his fifth straight 300-plus strikeout season. He also ties Nolan Ryan for most 300-plus strikeout seasons in a career (six).

September 15: Schilling strikes out eight Brewers to join Johnson as only teammates in MLB history to record 300-plus strikeouts in the same season.

September 18: Greg Colbrunn becomes second player in team history to hit for the cycle.

September 26: Johnson caps a 5-0 September by beating the Rockies for his Major League-best 24th victory. Johnson's record and 0.66 ERA for the month earned him Pitcher of the Month honors.

September 28: The D-backs clinch their third NL West title in four years, beating the Rockies, 17-8, in front of 46,170 @ Bank One Ballpark.

October 15: D-backs fall 6-3 to the Cardinals in Game 3 of the NL Division Series to end their season.

November 5: Johnson wins his fourth consecutive NL Cy Young Award and the fifth of his career. The lefty is a unanimous selection after capturing the "Triple Crown" of pitching, leading the NL in wins (24), ERA (2.32) and strikeouts (334).

2003

March 19: Signed Luis Gonzalez to a three-year contract extension through the 2006 season.

March 24: Signed Randy Johnson to a two-year contract extension through the 2005 season.

May 1: Randy Johnson had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.

May 29: Traded Byung-Hyun Kim to the Boston Red Sox for Mesa, Ariz. native, Shea Hillenbrand.

June 3: An MRI confirms a fractured bone in Curt Schilling's right hand.

June 30: D-backs win 12 consecutive games.

September 14: Randy Johnson tosses a one-hitter against the Rockies.

September 19: The Big Unit hits his first career homer.

November 28: Acquired LHP Casey Fossum, RHP Brandon Lyon, Minor League LHP Jorge de La Rosa and a player to be named later from Boston in exchange for Curt Schilling.

December 1: Acquired slugger Richie Sexson in a six-player trade with the Brewers.

2004

April 26: Richie Sexson¡¯s ninth home run in April, in a 9-0 win vs. Cubs, hits the Jumbotron, requiring repairs to the screen.

May 18: Randy Johnson throws club¡¯s first perfect game, 2-0 @ Braves¡­16th pitcher in history to throw a perfect game¡­threw 117 pitches, the last was a 98 mile-per-hour fastball to strike out Eddie Perez.

June 29: Randy Johnson becomes the fourth pitcher in history to reach 4,000 strikeouts.

July 2: Bob Brenly is replaced as manager by third base coach Al Pedrique.

July 4: Al Pedrique¡¯s first win as manager comes on Randy Johnson¡¯s complete-game, 6-2 win vs. Twins.

August 6: D-backs CEO Jerry Colangelo announces he will leave his post at season¡¯s end to be replaced by Jeff Moorad.

August 25: D-backs lose 2-1 @ Pirates in a franchise-record 1:47, the shortest 9-inning game in club history by 7 minutes.

September 10: Randy Johnson earns his 100th win as a D-back on his 41st birthday, 2-1 vs. Giants.

September 15: Randy Johnson becomes the all-time left-handed strikeout leader with a seventh-inning strikeout of Vinny Castilla, passing Steve Carlton and moving into third place on the all-time list in a 3-2 win vs. Rockies.

November 5: Bob Melvin named Manager.

2005

January 11: Trade Randy Johnson to the Yankees for Brad Halsey and Dioner Navarro, then sent Navarro and a trio of minor leaguers to Dodgers for Shawn Green, who signed a 3-year contract.

February 22: Commissioner Bud Selig approves Jeff Moorad as a General Partner in the D-backs¡¯ ownership group.

April 14: In the return of baseball to the nation¡¯s capital, the D-backs lost 5-3 @ Nationals¡­President George W. Bush throws out the ceremonial first pitch.

June 9: Javier V¨¢zquez¡¯s fifth inning walk to the Twins¡¯ Michael Cuddyer snaps a streak of 221 batters and 54.1 innings pitched without allowing a walk, both club records.

August 2: General Manager Joe Garagiola, Jr. resigns to accept a Vice Presidency with MLB¡­Assistant General Manager Bob Gebhard is named Interim GM.

September 23: Stadium renamed Chase Field with the merger of Chase and Bank One.

2006

January 6: Justin Upton, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft, signs with the D-backs.

June 13: Rookie Enrique Gonzalez retires 18 consecutive batters in a 2-1 win vs. Giants.

August 15: Second 18-inning game in franchise history¡­Luis Gonzalez¡¯s game-winning single seals a 2-1 win @ Rockies.

September 6: President Rich Dozer announces his intention to resign at season¡¯s end to be replaced by Executive Vice President Derrick Hall.

September 9: Brandon Webb throws first career 1-hitter, a complete-game, 3-0 win vs. Cardinals¡­1:54 game was shortest in Chase Field history.

October 1: Luis Gonzalez, Craig Counsell and Miguel Batista play their final games for the D-backs in a 7-6 loss vs. Padres in front of a franchise-record crowd of 48,946.

November 3: For the second consecutive year, Orlando Hudson wins the Rawlings Gold Glove award for second base (also in 2005 with Blue Jays).

November 8: D-backs unveil new team colors and uniforms - Sedona Red, Sonoran Sand and black - at the Hotel Valley Ho resort in Scottsdale.

2007

January 9: Acquire Randy Johnson from Yankees for Luis Vizcaino and three Minor Leaguers.

August 18: Micah Owings posts a 12-6 win @ Braves, allowing 3 runs over 7.0 innings and going 4-for-5 with a double, 2 homers and 6 RBI.

August 22: Brandon Webb¡¯s scoreless streak is halted at 42.0 innings on the Brewers¡¯ Prince Fielder¡¯s RBI single in the first inning¡­it¡¯s the 12th-longest streak in history.

September 5: Justin Upton named USA Today Minor League Player of the Year.

September 27: Micah Owings and 3 relievers combine for an 8-0 shutout @ Pirates¡­Owings was notified shortly before the game he would start in place of Brandon Webb and allowed 4 hits over 6.1 innings while going 4-for-4 with 3 RBI.

September 29: Clinch fourth NL West title prior to the game @ Rockies.

October 6: Complete NLDS sweep with a 5-1 win @ Cubs, advance to NLCS.

April 9: Doug Davis defeats the Dodgers, 10-5, before being placed on the disabled list for surgery to remove thyroid cancer and missing the next 38 games.

April 30: Micah Owings¡¯ pinch-hit, 2-run homer ties game in 8-7 win¡­first pinch-hit homer by pitcher since Brewers¡¯ Brooks Kieschnick on April 22, 2004 vs. D-backs.

June 3: Randy Johnson records 4,673rd strikeout (Brewers¡¯ Mike Cameron) to move past Roger Clemens into second place on the all-time list.

July 15: Dan Haren (2.0 IP) and Brandon Webb (1.0 IP) each make scoreless appearances for the NL All-Star Team @ Yankee Stadium.

July 26: Brandon Webb strikes out the Giants¡¯ Dave Roberts for his 1,000th career strikeout, joining Randy Johnson as the only other D-back to reach that mark.

August 12: D-backs¡¯ 4-2 win @ Rockies gives Bob Melvin his franchise-best 304th regular season win as manager.

August 16: Miguel Montero and Chris Young hit their first career grand slams in an 11-5 win @ Astros, the first time in history two D-backs have hit grand slams in same game.

September 1: Stephen Drew hits for cycle, third in club history and first-ever @ Chase Field.

September 28: Randy Johnson tosses his 100th career complete game in season finale 2-1 win vs. Rockies.

2009

January 2: Derrick Hall promoted to President and Chief Executive Officer when General Partner and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Moorad resigns.

April 6: D-backs hit 5 homers in 9-8 win vs. Rockies on Opening Day¡­Felipe L¨®pez and Tony Clark each homered from both sides of the plate, the first-time teammates had ever accomplished the feat on Opening Day and first in the regular season since April 23, 2000.

April 11: MLB awards the D-backs the 2011 All-Star Game as announced by Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig in a press conference @ Chase Field.

April 12: Nine-year-old Phoenix-resident Blaise Wagner becomes the 30,000,000th fan to enter Chase Field and the D-backs become the second-fastest team to reach the mark since an inception of a franchise, trailing only the Rockies, who reached the milestone in 1993.

May 8: Bob Melvin dismissed as Manager and replaced by A.J. Hinch, who at age 34 years and 357 days, became the youngest manager since Eric Wedge (34 years, 275 days) of the Indians on October 29, 2002.

May 10: A.J. Hinch and Esmerling Vasquez each earned first career victories in a win vs. Nationals, the 19th time since 1900 a manager and pitcher recorded their first win in the same game.

May 13: Gerardo Parra makes his Major League debut vs. Reds and homers in his first at-bat¡­second D-back (Alex Cabrera on June 26, 2000 vs. Astros), 100th player in Major League history and second of the season (Braves¡¯ Jordan Schafer on April 5 @ Phillies) to accomplish the feat.

July 13: Dan Haren becomes the first pitcher in Major League history to reach the All-Star break leading the Majors in the following four categories: ERA (2.01), strikeout to walk ratio (8.1), WHIP (0.81) and opponents¡¯ on-base percentage (.219)¡­his 9 wins and 2.01 ERA at the break marked the first time that a NL pitcher had at least 9 wins and an ERA that low at the break since 2000 (Randy Johnson-14 wins, 1.80 ERA and Danny Graves-9 wins, 1.99 ERA)

July 16: D-backs, Rockies and Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community announce plans for a new Spring Training facility on Community land to open in 2011¡­it¡¯s the first Major League spring training facility in the U.S. on Indian land.

August 22: D-backs streak of plate appearances without a walk ended at 153 when Mark Reynolds drew a walk in the fifth inning¡­the streak, which ran from August 17-22, was the longest streak in franchise history and the fifth-longest streak in baseball since 1998 as Detroit had the longest streak at 183 plate appearances without a walk from September 4-9, 2002.

August 29: Luis Gonzalez retires and rejoins club as Special Assistant to the President & CEO as the D-backs host ¡°Luis Gonzalez Appreciation Night.¡±

September 20: Dedicate broadcast wing of Chase Field press box to Hall-of-Famer Joe Garagiola.

November 16: Official groundbreaking ceremony for Spring Training facility.

May 11: Dan Haren starts game with franchise record of 9 consecutive outs on strikeouts.

July 2: Kirk Gibson makes managerial debut vs. Dodgers, becoming the fourth manager since 2001 to make his managerial debut against a team he formerly played for¡­with a 12-5 win, joined Bob Brenly (3-2 @ Dodgers, April 1, 2001) as the only D-backs¡¯ managers to win their debuts.

August 7: Retired Luis Gonzalez¡¯s No. 20, the first D-back to have his number retired.

August 7: Chris Young becomes the first D-back and fourth player in the last 40 years to hit a lead-off and walk-off homer in same game.

August 11: Tied Major League record for consecutive homers in a game (seventh time) on solo shots by Adam LaRoche, Miguel Montero, Mark Reynolds and Stephen Drew in the fourth inning @ Brewers.

September 13: D-backs and Reds¡¯ back-to-back homers in the second inning (D-backs¡¯ Miguel Montero and Ryan Church and Reds¡¯ Jay Bruce and Drew Stubbs) were the first back-to-back homers in the same inning since April 16, 2006.

2011

February 26: Inaugural game @ Salt River Fields at Talking Stick¡­D-backs lose, 8-7, vs. Rockies¡­sellout crowd of 12,514.

March 28: Set club record for Cactus League attendance with 189,737 fans in 17 games (11 sellouts).

June 6: Select pitchers Trevor Bauer and Archie Bradley with third and seventh picks, respectively, in First-Year Player Draft¡­first team in history with two of the first seven picks in the draft.

July 12: D-backs host 82nd All-Star Game¡­NL defeats AL, 5-1¡­Justin Upton and Miguel Montero, Kirk Gibson (coach) and trainer Ken Crenshaw serve on NL squad.

September 19: Ian Kennedy becomes NL¡¯s first 20-game winner after a 1-0 win vs. Pirates, allowing 1 hit with career-high-tying 12 strikeouts¡­the only other pitcher since 1900 to register at least 10 strikeouts and allow 1 hit or less in his 20th win was Warren Spahn, who tossed a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts on September 16, 1960 vs. Phillies (Elias)¡­fourth D-back to reach mark: Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, Brandon Webb.

September 23: Clinch fifth NL West crown with 3-1 win vs. Giants.

May 26: In recognition of Brain Tumor Awareness Month, D-backs Executive VP and General Manager Mike Hazen, and sons Charlie, John, Teddy and Sam, joined by D-backs President, CEO & General Partner Derrick Hall, presented a $200,000 donation on behalf of the Nicole Hazen Fund for Hope to the Ivy Brain Tumor Center to honor the memory of Nicole and in recognition of the incredible work of the Ivy Brain Tumor Center in the fight against brain cancer. The donation was matched by Cynthia Oehme, and on behalf of The Women¡¯s Board of Barrow Neurological Foundation, Amy and Andrew Cohn, for a total donation of $400,000. Dr. Nader Sanai, Nicole Hazen's neurosurgeon, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

June 6: On the off day in Washington, D.C., Representative Juan Ciscomani, a Tucson native, avid D-backs fan and the U.S. representative for Arizona's 6th congressional district, gave various D-backs' players, coaches, staff and executives a private behind-the-scenes tour of the U.S. Capitol Building, including a bird's eye view of live floor voting.
